To the Editor:
Our Congressman Frank Wolf (R-10) addressed the 10th District Jefferson Dinner April 12 at Airlie House.
We drove all the way out to Airlie to hear our favorite congressman explain his latest critical tipping point — his fight against Congressional earmarks, and we’d like to share this with you. It’s the #1 issue on his agenda this year. After reminding us of his Republican primary June 10 (please vote at your usual polling place), Frank launched into his most recent legislative passion for fiscal reform.
He is sponsoring a bill to deal with federal spending, entitlements, earmarks and interest on the debt along with 165 co-sponsors, both Republicans and blue dog Democrats, who are more than concerned and more than worried about our "$9 trillion of debt that can sink the ship."
Frank declared: "We have 54 trillion in unfunded obligations. China holds 1 trillion of our debt, as do the Saudis and others …The Chinese cyber program is more aggressive than the former Soviet Union in the cold war … We’re selling a lot of weapons to countries that are our enemies ... Sen. Warner says we’ll lose our 3A Bond rating by 2014, in 9 or 10 years … This is not only an economic issue but a moral one … What are we leaving our grand kids with rising food costs and spending out of control? This is a generational issue as well as a moral one …
"Passage of this bill will create more jobs and bring about a renaissance, a rebirth in our country … In 1647, a gentleman by the name of William Wilburforce spoke this warning to the British House of Commons: ‘… having heard all of this, you may choose to look the other way, but you can never say you didn’t know’."
Anti-earmarks legislation? Sounds really important to us. Thank you for taking a minute to hear it from one of the best in Congress.
