To the Editor:
This is in response to the column by Michael Lee Pope on the Alexandria City Budget, page 1, May 8.
Why can't I be average?
While the average residential real estate tax bill might be going down by $7 (about 50 cents a month), mine is actually going up $351.41 (over $29 dollars per month).
That's the problem with averages. They are not helpful—except for this use in the propaganda from the City. They are useless. They are exactly correct for no one.
I believe the City should report a range instead of an average. Knowing that the tax went from a decrease of $XXXX to an increase of $XXXX would help hardworking, legal tax payers know where they stand in the range.
I have asked the City to do this. And I am asking you to insist that the City provide this information to you for reporting.
