Fairfax County residents are now able to track their local government through a variety of popular social networking sites, including Twitter.

During the county’s last two Board of Supervisors meetings, public information officers have been sending out hyper updates like "Board authorizes application for federal domestic violence grant funding, if successful, could bring $400K over 36 months," and "Feb. 15-12 designated Engineers Week in Fairfax County," via Twitter, which allows people — and apparently local governments — to relay messages about their whereabouts and happenings in short spurts approximately one sentence long.

The county has sent out 93 such messages since joining Twitter at the end of last month and has 31 "followers," who track its movement via the Twitter Web site. For more information, go to http://twitter.com/fairfaxcounty.
