The Madison High boys tennis team defeated McLean, 6-3, in a March 18 Liberty District match at Madison. With the victory, Madison improved its record to 2-0. McLean fell to 1-1. Madison, in singles play, got wins from sophomore Dan Sablik (No. 1 singles), senior Sam Shroder (No. 3), junior Eric Leeson (No. 4) and senior Zack Armstrong (No. 5).

McLean’s singles wins came from seniors Scott Richardson (No. 2 singles) and George Kennedy (No. 6).

In doubles action, Madison got victories at No. 2 (Shroder/Leeson) and No. 3 (Nathan Ostapovicz and Chris Leslie).

McLean’s No. 1 team of Sameli Sivonen and Andrew Cole was victorious.
Two days earlier, in Madison’s season opener on March 16, the Warhawks defeated host Marshall, 7-2. Madison’s singles winners in that match were: Nathan Ostapovicz (No. 2), Sam Shroder (No. 3), Eric Leeson (No. 4), Zack Armstrong (No. 5) and Chris Leslie (No. 6).

McLean’s win in singles came at No. 1 where sophomore Daniel Nguyen was victorious. In doubles, Nguyen and Cameron Herbolsheimer won at No. 1.
Madison’s No. 2 doubles team of Shroder and Leeson were winners, as was Madison’s No. 3 team of Ostapovicz and Leslie.

The Oakton High crew team re-named a recently purchased shell after its long time coach, Tom Bennett. Ceremonies for the occasion were conducted on a March Saturday at Sandy Run Regional Park. Coach Bennett has been with the team since its inception six years ago. He has coached every level of boys’ and girls’ rowers. His dedication and good sportsmanship have established a core foundation for the Oakton team.

Vienna’s Garrett Roe, a sophomore ice hockey player at St. Cloud State University (Minn.), earned a place on the 2009 All-Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Team. Roe, a forward, received his award at the WCHA Awards Banquet on March 19 at the River Center in downtown St. Paul. The banquet served as a kick-off for the 2009 Red Baron WCHA Final Five tournament, which took place March 19-21, at the Xcel Energy Center. Roe, named Third Team All-WCHA, was one of three St. Cloud players this season to gain All-WCHA honors. It marked the second consecutive season in which he has earned all-conference accolades.
Roe led this year’s Huskies with 48 points and 31 assists. In WCHA play, he ranked among the league's top five players with 29 points (10 goals/19 assists). The Huskies completed the season with an 18-17-3 overall record, and they were 13-13-2 in the conference. It was the fourth consecutive season in which St. Cloud finished with a winning record.

The Madison High girls’ lacrosse team overwhelmed visiting Liberty District opponent South Lakes, 18-2, in a recent contest. The Warhawks, with the win, improved their early season record to 4-0. Madison was scheduled to play a game this week at district opponent Thomas Jefferson on Tuesday.

Vienna’s Katie Nutaitis is a sophomore first baseman for the Charleston College (Conway, S.C.) women’s softball team this spring. Through March 20, Nutaitis, a former standout player at Bishop O’Connell High in Arlington, was second on the team in batting average at .271 and third on the team in slugging percentage at .342. The Cougars (4-10) are members of the Southern Conference.

Vienna’s Brandon Altmann, a member of the University of Mary Washington men’s basketball team, was recently named Second Team All-Region by D3Hoops.com.
Altmann, a junior center, also gained first team, All-CAC honors after leading the Eagles in both scoring (17.7 points per game), rebounding (11.1) and blocked shots (43 on the season).

The Marshall High girls’ tennis team, in a recent home match under blue skies, upset a strong W.T. Woodson team in an early season Liberty District match. The Statesmen, under coach Robin Crider, built a 4-2 lead in singles play. Marshall singles winners were freshman Faby Chaillo (No. 1 singles), Ana Dominguez (No. 2), Amanda Crider (No. 4) and Sarah Dolan (No. 5). Marshall’s No. 1 doubles team of Dominquez and Chaillo was also victorious for the Statesmen.

Marshall (2-0) had also won its prior team match, a solid 8-1 victory over Madison in its district opener. Under threatening skies, the visiting Marshall team played with a lot of focus and jumped out to an early lead. The Statesmen won five of the six singles matches. Singles winners were: Faby Chaillo (No. 1), Ana Dominguez (No. 2), Lauren Hopwood (No. 3), Sarah Dolan (No. 4) and Astrid Adam (No. 6).

The Statesmen swept in doubles play as Chaillo and Dominguez (No. 1), Hopwood and Amanda Crider (No. 2) and Adam and Kelly Crider (No. 3) were all winners.

The Marshall High JV girls’ lacrosse team is off to a terrific start this spring. The Statesmen, with many girls playing the sport for the first time, have garnered early season wins over both Falls Church and Stone Bridge.

The Statesmen JVers are under second year coach Nicholle Depaz. A Marshall High graduate, Depaz played college lacrosse at both Old Dominion University and Virginia Tech. She is proud of her team’s play thus far.

"For a majority of my team, this is their third week playing lacrosse," she said. "We still have a lot to learn. I am very proud of our efforts these past two weeks and look forward to how the rest of the season will play out once we have a couple more practices and games under our belts."
Marshall won its game over non-district opponent Falls Church, 14-1, then was victorious over Liberty District opponent Stone Bridge, 10-4.

Going into the current Northern Region high school baseball season, the region coaches put together a pre-season Top 10 Baseball Poll. The following are the results of that poll: 1) West Springfield, 2) Lake Braddock, 3) Chantilly, 4) Stone Bridge, 5) McLean, 6) Madison, 7) South County, 8) Robinson, 9) Westfield, 10) Langley. Other team to receive votes were Oakton, Yorktown, Centreville, Woodson, Marshall and Washington and Lee.

Vienna resident William Snead, 66, will be running at the upcoming 113th Boston Marathon on April 20. He will be competing as part of the American Liver Foundation Team.

At the marathon, 240 runners from 26 states will comprise the American Liver Foundation’s Run for Research (RFR) team. These individuals will run 26.2 miles to help the 30 million Americans who are affected by liver disease. On Marathon Monday, Snead will be among the many that tackles the rigorous marathon course from Hopkinton, Mass., through the hills of Newton and on to the finish line in Boston.
