Mike Finelli’s father started his law enforcement career with the Vienna Police Department. Finelli’s aunt spent 20 years working there. Two years ago, the Madison High School graduate joined the Vienna Police Department and, on July 15, he was awarded the 2009 Vienna Optimist Club’s Charles A. Robinson Respect for Law Award. The award was presented to Finelli by former Mayor Robinson’s wife, Maud Robinson, who, in June, retired from the Vienna Town Council. Candidates for the award were nominated by their respective commanders. The police department named Vienna’s recipient. The Optimists recognized a Fairfax County police officer at the award banquet, as well.
"Many people have expressed their appreciation for Officer Finelli’s professionalism," said Vienna Police Department PIO, MPO Bill Murray. "He has been recognized as a caring and compassionate officer who takes the time to listen and help others."
"Growing up here, I like keeping Vienna the way it used to be," said Finelli. "Trouble-free, safe family environment. Vienna has a good relationship between its public service employees and the community."
Finelli remembers being a teen in Vienna and getting a bit stressed out himself when a police officer approached a group of teens. "Being a young officer, I think it helps to communicate with teens better."
He responded to the call of the assault on a young woman jogging along the W&OD park trail on July 15, and believes being similar in age to the victim encouraged her to discuss the incident freely with him when he responded.
"I think I’m pretty easy to talk with," Finelli said.
