Volunteer Loudoun (VL) recently honored Nikki Ivey, a junior at Briar Woods High School, as Student Volunteer of the Month. She was nominated and selected for the award for her work with the Claude Moore Community Builders (CMCB) program.
Nikki was recognized by the VL Board of Directors with a Certificate of Appreciation and the opportunity to present a $100 donation from VL to a charity of her choice. Rosa Sherrod, VL Student Committee member, presented Nikki with her award and said "Nikki Ivey carries with her the spirit of volunteerism. Her service to her community has not only impacted the lives of those she has served, but is also a testament of what just one teen can accomplish with a giving heart."
The Extra Mile Club at Park View High School donated 374 sandwiches to the DC Central Kitchen, in recognition of the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.
Club Officers: Katie Lynch, Melissa Stuckey, Chrystyne Ruiz and Brittany Hulbert, along with sponsors Magi Shepley and Liz Driggers organized the sandwich making during lunch that day which allowed the club to involve the entire school in the activity. To highlight the event the classes had a relay race making a sandwich during that afternoon’s pep rally. The sandwiches went to both the Kitchen’s street teams who work directly with homeless in DC, and to the Healthy Snacks program, which provides food to programs serving young children (Headstart), and at-risk youth in after-school programs & clubs. The project received generous donations from; Wegmans in Sterling, Giant Food in Sterling, and Whole Foods in Reston. The Extra Mile Club is Park View’s service organization.
