Members of Herndon United Methodist Church will travel to help the less fortunate at home and abroad next year, and the church raised a good portion of the funding for those mission trips on Saturday, with its annual Harvest Bazaar.

About 20 vendors and crafters filled the church’s Doe Hall for the bazaar, and the women staged a bake sale, while the men sold homemade Brunswick stew. The event also included a morning car wash and yard sale and a silent auction. "That’s a great fund raiser for us because it’s all donated stuff," Cheryl Brock, director of congregational life, said of the baskets full of goods in the silent auction.

For children, the event offered a games area and an afternoon puppet show, and the day was capped with a Brunswick stew dinner and a gospel concert featuring the band All 4 Hymn.

Next year, adult mission teams will go to New Orleans, Costa Rica and Haiti, Brock said, adding that the funds raised Saturday would also help pay for the adults to assist low-income local residents in rebuilding their homes through the Rebuilding Together program, formerly known as Christmas in April. Meanwhile, youth mission groups will work in Houma, La., just south of New Orleans, and Raleigh, N.C., and college-aged youths will carry their mission to Costa Rica. The youths also participate in activities to help needy locals every month.

"We’re very mission-oriented here," Brock said.
