The award-winning Fairfax High School Chorus Department, under the direction of Susanna Martone, has a Spring Concert on Friday, May 26, at 7:30 p.m. The choirs will be joined by Curtain Acts, selected through an audition process, and the theme of the concert is the delightful merriment of "Broadway". Students from W.T. Woodson High School's Advanced Placement Studio Art class exhibit their work at the Frame Factory in Vienna, 212 Dominion Road, from Tuesday, May 23-Friday, June 2 with an opening reception May 23 from 7:30-9 p.m. The exhibition features 13 art students, many of whom are going on to top level art schools next year.
George Mason University offers summer enrichment day camps taught by trained university students on its Fairfax campus. The New Horizons Leadership camp, for children in grades 7-10, and the New Horizons Creativity Camp, for children in grades run July 10-14, 4-6, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The Science, Engineering and Technology Camp and the Get Your Hands Dirty Environmental Camp run July 17-21, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The New Horizons Leadership Camp, a new camp this year, helps students develop leadership and civic skills and includes one overnight stay in the dorms. Several local students won awards at the 2006 Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland. These students include:

* Steve D’Souza and Stephanie D’Souza of Robinson Secondary School won first place in Special Awards from the Institute of Industrial Engineers.
Robinson Secondary School’s Varsity dance team won first place Saturday, April 1 in the Prop Division competition of Eastern Dance Association’s 11th Annual National Dance Classic Championship. The varsity team also won third in the Varsity Jazz and Varsity Pom competitions. The Robinson JV dance team won first place in the JV Pom category. Varsity dance captains are Jamie Garubba and Janelle Huggins. JV dance captains are Sara Kraus, Jane Chappell, Katie Duffy and Brittney Mooney. Chris J. Borer Jr. received a $500 Scholarship Award for the upcoming school year from the Purdue Club of Washington D.C. The yearbook at Robinson Secondary School, "Sentry," was named 2005 Yearbook Pacemaker Award finalist by the National Scholastic Press Association. This was one of 55 finalists from across the nation.

Five choirs and three bands from W.T. Woodson High School in Fairfax won top honors March 31 at “Festival Disney” in Orlando, Fla. Two hundred thirty choral students and 160 band students from Woodson participated in the event. All five of Woodson’s choirs and all three of the school’s performing bands received superior ratings and “Best in Class” awards. Woodson also won the gold, silver and bronze awards for the first, second and third highest scores of all 25 choirs that participated in the festival, and two gold awards for the top scoring concert and jazz bands.
Fairfax High School student Annika Webber participated in Lynchburg College's fifth annual scholarship competition. Webber, the daughter of Janet Grubb-Webber, was among 286 students competing for scholarships by completing an essay contest and interviews with college faculty. Webber has been accepted to Lynchburg College.
The National Merit Scholarship Program designated several Fairfax County Public Schools students as Merit Scholarship winners for 2006. Scholarships, which range from $500 to $10,000, are corporate-sponsored and are renewable for up to four years of study at the college of the student's choice. This year's scholars include:
* Austin Kwon of Fairfax, a student at Robinson Secondary School, who received a scholarship from Northrop Grumman for business.
* Timothy Loffredo of Fairfax, a student at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, who received a scholarship from Lockheed Martin for computer science.
Fairfax High School student Linda Scott has been selected to represent Fairfax High School in Virginia's All-Status Chorus in April. Also selected as alternates were Glen North and George Kipouros.

Gan Israel Preschool hosts its first-ever Bike-a-Thon Wednesday, June 7 to raise funds for Inova Fairfax Children’s Hospital. The students, who recently completed a learning unit about health, have collected sponsors for the amount of feet they bike during the event and have also created artwork to give as gifts to the hospital. Willow Springs Elementary School students competed and won in creative problem-solving competition “Odyssey of the Mind” Saturday, March 4. Representing Region 13 in the competition, the winning Division 1 team designed and built an Egyptian-themed float and parade. Their membership sign featured hieroglyphics denoting the school name and team number, and their performance included an original violin piece composed by student Anthony Applewhite. The team members are fifth-graders Anthony Applewhite and Warren Smith, both 10; fourth graders Leila Adams, 9, Emil Dharia, 9, and Jason Kim, 10; and third-graders Jenny Kim and Brian Kim, both 9. They were coached by Inge Gedo.
Several local students have been awarded in the 2006 National Scholastic Art Awards competition administered by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. National winners will be honored at a ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City June 8, and several Gold Award winners’ work will be displayed at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. June 30-Aug. 6. Award winners include:
* Anton Merbaum of W.T. Woodson High School won a Gold Award for his painting “Morning Blues” and a Silver Award for his painting “Old Woman.” He also won a Silver Award for his portfolio.

Anna Choi, Will Cope and Kristen Sacco of the Fairfax Academy division of Fashion Group International have been awarded scholarships. Choi will attend the Parsons School of Design while Cope and Sacco will study at the Fashion Institute of Technology. This is the first year that the scholarship has been awarded to three Fairfax Academy students.
Gesher Jewish Day School's middle school Science Bowl team tied for 3rd place in the Maryland regional competition on Friday, May 8 at the University of Maryland in College Park. Eight teams competed for the opportunity to represent the region in Denver, Colo. this summer.
