Mount Vernon names its Citizen of the Year

"Music is Love in search of a word."

That phrase from Sidney Lanier's poem "The Symphony" could be an introduction to the 2002 Mount Vernon District Citizen of the Year, Ulysses S. James.

A retired Navy Commander, James has not just lived in Mount Vernon since 1977, he has used that talent for leadership to enhance the cultural life of his community. He has conducted the Mount Vernon Youth Orchestra since 1984 and served as conductor and music director of the Mount Vernon Orchestra since 1985.

Under his leadership, the latter has become one of the most respected orchestras in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Most recently, he added to those accomplishments the establishment of the Mount Vernon Junior Orchestra for elementary school students.

In 1993 James established the month-long summer Mount Vernon Music Camp. This joined his free chamber music series which has been held every summer for many years at the Alexandria Lyceum.

Through his direction, the Mount Vernon Orchestra entered into an ongoing business partnership with Fort Hunt Elementary School in support of the Fort Hunt Fine Arts Focus Program. This year the orchestra will enter into a similar relationship with West Potomac High School in support of their music programs.

James and his wife Nancy, have two sons and daughter. He will be honored by the Mount Vernon Council April 27, at its 15th Annual Gala to be held at the Fort Belvoir Golf Facility. Fairfax County Executive Anthony Griffin, will be the guest speaker.
