Gas Leak Causes Minor Concern

Seventy five dump trucks and 25 to 30 construction workers were evacuated from the Patent and Trademark office site when a piece of construction equipment ruptured a gas line Monday.

The Alexandria Fire Department was called to the site at the corner of Ballinger and John Carlyle at around 8:30 a.m. By 9:05 a.m., a Washington Gas crew was on the scene.

“We interrupted service at around 11:49 a.m. and restored it by around 2:15 p.m.,” said Miguel Gonzalez, a senior communications specialist with Washington Gas. “At no time were any customers affected.”

Also, at no time were any of the residents of nearby Carlyle Towers or the Federal Courthouse evacuated. The fire department did ask members of the media who were standing outside the courthouse covering the John Walker Lindh trial not to smoke.
