The South Lakes High School Jazz Band will be hosting a fund-raising dinner on May 17 at the Reston Community Center. Familiar jazz songs such as "Night Train," "Green Onions" and "Pink Panther" will be performed with trumpet and saxophone soloists. The dinner starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $17 per person. Melissa Vickers, class of 2003 at South Lakes High School, has been selected to participate in the National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC) on Medicine & Health Care, a leadership development program for outstanding high school students. The conference will give Melissa the opportunity to study, experience, and develop her leadership skills together with about 1,500 other high school students from the United States and 45 other countries.

Meredith Zukas, daughter of James and Phyllis Zukas of Reston, earned honorable mention dean's list at Lynchburg College, a private college located in Central Virginia, enrolling 2,100 students in the professional, liberal arts and sciences, and graduate studies.

The Environmental Quality Advisory Council of Fairfax County is seeking applications from high school students who are interested in serving on the council as the student member from July 2002 through July 2003. As a member the student will get the opportunity to be involved in the process of making decisions and recommendations that impact the environment in the county. Those interested in serving on the committee can call 703-324-1210 before May 1.
