AHC, the Arlington-based developer and manager of affordable housing, has won the 2002 "Best Project in Northern Virginia" award from the Housing Association of Nonprofit Developers (HAND). AHC won the award for its renovation of the Berkeley Apartments on South Glebe Road. After acquiring the 137-apartment property in late 2000, AHC's goal was to clean up the complex while still keeping it affordable for most residents. Following the rehabilitation, 80 percent of the apartments remain affordable to persons earning 45-55 percent of the area median income, according to AHC. The Berkeley renovation, completed in April, included a new roof, facade and windows, new heating and air conditioning systems, kitchen and bath improvements and a new community room and computer center, where residents enjoy a variety of educational and recreational programs offered by AHC staff and volunteers.
