Arlington Alliance for the Mentally Ill (AMI) will host its monthly support group meeting for family members and friends of persons suffering from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses on Tuesday, July 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, 1500 N. The Arlington Agency on Aging will hold a free program on Long Term Care Insurance at the Department of Human Services building, 3033 Wilson Blvd., Room 7F, on Tuesday, July 23 at 7 p.m. The seminar will include information on the basic features of most long term care insurance policies and consumer tips on things to consider when deciding whether or not to purchase a policy, and information on the new federal long term care plans. There is free parking under the building (entrance on North Highland Street) and it is opposite the Clarendon Metro stop. Pre-registration is preferred, but not required.

<1st>Virginia Hospital Center will present the following programs. Most classes take place at the John T. Hazel, M.D. Conference Center, 1701 N. George Mason Drive. Times and locations are indicated. Call to register for all classes at 703-558-5000.

* Sibling Class. Children ages 4-8 will have an opportunity to hold and diaper a life-like doll, take a tour of the postpartum unit and nursery and learn why babies cry, how they are fed, the importance of washing hands before touching babies and all about identification bracelets. Class will be held on Saturday, July 13 from 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. (ages 2-3) and from 10:30-11:30 a.m. (ages 4-8). Cost is $10.

* Getting Ready for Pregnancy. Caren Kieswetter, MD reviews everything you need to know about pregnancy on Monday, July 15. Bring a partner to the conference center from 6-7 p.m.

* Massage for Couples. Discover a new way to communicate with a partner. Learn the benefits and techniques of massage in a hands-on workshop from 9-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 13 at 1311 S. Fern St. Cost is $45.

* Hospital Tour for Expectant Parents. Adults only. Pre-register for the free tour which takes place on Sundays, July 14, 21 and 28, from 2-3 p.m.

* Saturday Childbirth Class. A preparation class for expectant parents in one session covering pregnancy, labor, delivery and the postpartum period from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 27. Cost is $125.

* Inner Transformation, a weekly support group for people who want to look at personal issues that get in the way of healthy relationships. Requires a minimum six-week commitment on Sundays at 5 p.m. Cost is $45 per session.

* Depressives Action Group meets during the day on Wednesdays for people with mild depression. The group provides emotional support, and a task support system will help get through the week. Cost is $30 per session.

* Being Heard, Being Healed is a weekly group gives members a place to share their stories and experiences for a healing transformation. Meets Thursdays, from 8-10 p.m.

* Garbology. This is the study and practice of eating junk foods. Learn how to influence children's eating habits on Wednesday, July 10, at 7 p.m. Cost is $10.

Wellness Plus: Basic Health, Wellness and Weight Management Program. Learn how to make lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of disease, restore health and maintain optimum weight at 7 p.m., Wednesdays, July 24-August 21. Involves nutrition, label reading, food preparation, stress reduction and fitness. Cost is $89.

* Honoring the Healer Within. Explore therapeutic treatments for infants, children and parents integrating emotional and physical challenges on Saturday, July 27 at 10 a.m.

* Teaming Up. Mothers and daughters exploring food and body image on Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 23 and 25, July 30 and August 1, at 12:30 p.m. Lunches and dinners included. Cost $120.

* Searching for a Miracle, Try Water. How much water is needed to reduce chronic pain, hypertension, stress, fatigue, and weight; how to tell the signs of dehydration at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3. Cost $10. Call 703-522-7710.

* Honoring the Healer Within. Explore subtle therapeutic treatments for infants, children, and parents that provide integrative support for emotional and physical challenges with Nishanka Lahr, CranioSacral Therapist at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17. Cost $10. Call 703-522-7710.

* Making Sushi and Health Foods. Learn about Asian vegetables, ingredients, and cooking methods while making and enjoying delicious dishes at noon on Saturday, Aug. 17. Cost $10. Call 703-522-7710.

* Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Disorders. Meets weekly on Wednesdays, from 7-9 p.m., at the Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute, 3302 Gallows Road in Falls Church. Call Shannon Flynn at 703-527-0370.

* Northern Virginia Mental Health Consumers Association. Meets the first Sunday of each month, at 4 p.m., at Independence Center, 3100 Clarendon Blvd. Call 703-978-3017, Ext. 30.

Narcotics Anonymous is a support group for people who want to turn their life around from using drugs. The group meets at Drew Community Center, 3500 S. 24th St., on Tuesdays from 7:30-9 p.m. Call John Robinson at 703-979-7300.

The Arlington County Seniors in Action program offers a wide range of activities for seniors 55 and over. Fitness programs include aerobic exercise classes, strength training, walking groups, water aerobics, line dancing, square dancing, tennis, bowling, golf, yoga and Tai Chi. Seniors may join the Senior Adult Programs for $5 annually and access all activities. In some instances, an additional cost, such as $2 a class, may be necessary. Call 703-228-4744.

* Computer Classes. The Office of Senior Adult Programs and Arlington County Adult Education have collaborated in designing computer classes for seniors. A five-class session is available at $25 per class, or separate classes at $28 per class. The classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Clarendon Education Center (old Sears building). Call 703-228-7200 to register.

* Cyber Seniors/Cyber Teens is a program of youths teaching seniors how to use the computer, Internet and e-mail. Each course consists of four 1-hour sessions taught at a local school or senior center at a cost of $20 per class. Currently there are three basic instruction courses being offered, a health-related course and classes in Word and Excel.
