Two Principals Resign

July 18, 2002

Two principals have resigned after only one year in Alexandria. Ken Newby at Jefferson-Houston School for Arts and Academics and Linda Goldberg, principal at Maury Elementary School both resigned this past week.

"I regretfully accepted these resignations from such fine school leaders,” said Rebecca L. Perry, superintendent of Schools in Alexandria. “They both have had a positive impact on their school communities. However, I understand that they have some exciting new opportunities to pursue and I wish them all the best.”

Goldberg has accepted a position with the Montgomery County public school system and Newby will be working for a national education organization.

“While I wish both of them luck in their new positions, this will certainly make me take a harder look at principals who are coming into our district at the end of their careers,” said V. Rodger Digilio, a member of the Alexandria School Board. “We want leaders who are going to make a long-term commitment to their school communities, not those who are only going to stay for one year.”

School personnel is reviewing applications but most principals have already signed contracts for the upcoming school year, making the task of replacing these two more difficult than it would have been had the search begun earlier.
