The 12 members of the Fairfax County School Board are elected to four-year terms in nonpartisan elections. There is one member elected from each of the county's nine magisterial districts and three members that serve at large. The current board's term expires Dec. 31, 2003.
A student representative is selected for a one-year term by the countywide Student Advisory Council. The student representative participates in meetings, but is a nonvoting member of the board. School Board members are paid a salary of $12,000 per year, with an additional $1,000 for the chairman.
