Defense Analyst Commits Suicide

July 25, 2002

Neighbors in the 500 block of Prince Street witnessed police activity last Friday. Not only were Alexandria police involved, but members of the FBI and DIA, as well.

They were called to an apartment to investigate the death of a 57-year-old man who was an analyst with the Defense Intelligence Agency.

The investigation concluded that Paul Belbutowski had committed suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head and died some time early on the 19th.

Alexandria police were called to the residence at around 9:30 a.m., by a sheriff’s deputy who happened to be in the neighborhood on unrelated business. The deputy had been notified that a man was dead inside his apartment. Co-workers had found him after failing to show for a meeting that morning. After co-workers were unable to reach him by telephone, the colleagues went to Belbutowski’s apartment.

The Defense Intelligence Agency is a Department of Defense combat support agency and a member of the United States intelligence community. With more than 7,000 military and civilian employees worldwide, DIA is a major producer and manager of foreign military intelligence. They provide military intelligence to war fighters, defense policymakers and force planners, in the Department of Defense and the Intelligence Community, in support of U.S. military planning and operations and weapon systems acquisition.
