In Charge: Elected, Appointed Officials Lead Community

District roles provide local representation in county government.

July 26, 2002

Fairfax County has nine magisterial districts. Each elects a supervisor who represents a district on the Board of Supervisors.

The chairman of the Board of Supervisors runs county-wide, and can reside in any of the nine magisterial districts.

The supervisors’ terms run for four years. All will face re-election in November, 2003, for terms beginning in January, 2004.

Presently the make up of the Board of Supervisors is seven Democrats, including Chairman Katherine Hanley, and three Republicans.

In Fairfax County, the supervisors are part-time officials. Many of them hold other jobs.

They earn $65,000 for their work as supervisors, meeting twice a month to conduct county business.

Each supervisor has a budget of about $350,000 annually to pay their office staff. The money can be divided as each individual supervisor sees fit.

The Fairfax County School Board also has one representative from each of the magisterial districts, and in addition, three are elected at large.

School Board members run without party affiliations, but carry endorsements from the respective political parties.

Dranesville District’s representative, Jane Strauss, is endorsed by the Democratic Party.

School Board members will also be re-elected next year.

Each member of the Board of Supervisors appoints a representative to the Fairfax County Planning Commission and the Fairfax County Park Authority, who serve at the pleasure of the supervisor.

In Dranesville District, Rick Thoesen of Herndon is the representative to the Park Authority.

He has said he will step down in November because he was elected mayor of Herndon in May and assumed duties in July.

Joan DuBois of McLean is Mendelsohn’s appointee to the Planning Commission.

Members of the School Board and Planning Commission receive stipends. Park Authority members do not.
