<bt>Recently, several South Lakes high School art students received awards at the regional and national level of the National Scholastic Fine Art Competition. Twelve students received Gold Keys: Claire Nelson, Jessica Robertson, Beth Stanfield and Anna Whitehead for photography; Tony Rivas, Michael Ohgren and Sarah Hofmann for mixed media; Michael Ohgren and Maggie Edwards for sculpture; Petra Cox for painting and fine art portfolio; and Michael Hamilton for computer graphics. Winners of the Scholastic Silver Key were: Stephanie Albert, Bay Johnson and Kristin Thornton for computer graphics; Brook Tobey for drawing and sculpture, Stephanie Albert, Jennifer Kennedy and Karen Morgensen for mixed media; and Sarah Hoffman and Allison Laskey for fine art portfolio. Brook Tobey received a Certificate of Merit for his fine art portfolio. Other Certificate recipients were Emily Carlin for drawing; Alicia Hall and Christian Schultz for computer graphics; Thomas Newcomb for mixed media; Andrea Nicolaescu for sculpture; and Christian Schultz for photography. Many of these students' work was selected for the National Competition. Jessica Robertson's photography portfolio earned a National Silver Key Award, and Anna Whitehead won the American Visions Award.

Over spring break, Maura McKnight, whose daughter Mary Collins is a senior International Baccalaureate Art student at South Lakes, and five other "moms" used materials donated by Home Depot and Reston Glass to paint and refurbish two art display cases and two 8' x 12' display boards in South Lakes' entrance hall. The new black background and adjustable glass shelves, which the parents installed, give the students' art new depth.
