Alison Gaurdiano of Fairfax, a senior at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, is serving as regimental commander, the academy’s highest ranking midshipman officer. She is responsible for the Academy’s entire regiment of midshipmen, which involves supervising all of her fellow midshipmen officers and assuming accountability for her classmates as they fulfill the Academy’s rigorous regimental requirements. She recently received the Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities award.

On May 16, the memory of Lt. Col. Charles Park was honored when the Lt. Col. Charles A. Park Staff Fuels Officer Award was presented at a banquet held at the Crystal Gateway Marriott Hotel, Arlington. The recipient of the award this year was 1st Lt. Kerry M. Colburn, of Headquarters Air Mobility Command, Scott AFB, Ill. Michael James Park of Burke, son of the late Lt. Col. Park, presented the award in his father’s memory this year. This annual award, formerly the Outstanding Fuels Staff Officer of the Year Award, was named in memory of Lt. Col. Park in July of 2001. Park was a recipient of the award in 1984, while serving at Headquarters Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base.

Navy Ensign Raymond T. Britt, son of Diane Britt of Fairfax, recently received his commission as a naval officer after completing Officer Candidate School at Naval Aviation Schools Command in Pensacola, Fla.

Marine Corps Pvt. Jennifer L. Dezk, daughter of Chong Dezk of Fairfax, and David Dezk of Modesto, Calif., recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, SC. She is a 2001 graduate of Fairfax High School.

Navy Hospitalman Apprentice Laura N. Arellano, daughter of Edder and Eugenio Arellano of Fairfax, recently graduated from the Basic Hospital Corps School at Naval Hospital Corps School in Great Lakes, Ill. She is a 2001 graduate of Fairfax High.
