Violence Mars School Event

International Night at West Springfield High School was marred by tragedy Tuesday, March 5 when a scuffle in the parking lot ended with a stabbing.

West Springfield freshman Hamayone Kaker was at the multi-cultural event demonstrating a dance from Afghanistan.

"I was doing the Afghan dance. At intermission, I walked outside and saw a huge crowd. I saw Officer [Mike] Ukele holding him [stabbing victim]" Kaker said. Ukele is the Fairfax County school resource officer at West Springfield.

Sophomore Danilo Delgado saw the victim in the bathroom at the school.

"I saw the guy that was cut in the bathroom, I didn't see any blood. I saw two guys running to their car," he said.

As they walked outside, they noticed several males standing in a group. The 16-year-old realized his older brother was involved in a physical fight with the group. The 16 year old joined in the fight, which dispersed once several school teachers came outside. The 18 year old was stabbed in his side and was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment of his non-life threatening injury. The 16 year old was not injured. The group of males all fled from the area in an unknown direction. The group is described as Asian, 18 to 20 years old, five-feet eight inches tall and having black hair with blond spikes. All of the suspects were wearing black, ski-style jackets.

Kaker thought it was the result of an earlier argument.
