A new training program for family child-care providers and center workers will begin in June. The program presented by ACAP Inc., a nonprofit providing services to Arlington County, will operate from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Monday-Friday, for 10 weeks. Participants must be low-income county residents and must be legally able to work in the United States. Participants receive certificates for all training completed, a diploma for the 10-week program, and a stipend to use in their business. Call 703-241-2040, Ext. 41.

The Arlington Center for Well-Being, at 3800 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 5, offers workshops throughout the year. Call 703-522-7710 to register and for fees:

* Inner Transformation, a weekly support group for people who want to look at personal issues that get in the way of healthy relationships. Requires a minimum six-week commitment on Sundays at 5 p.m. Cost is $30 per session.

* Being Heard, Being Healed. This weekly group gives members a place to share their stories and experiences for a healing transformation. Thursdays, from 8-10 p.m.

* The Artist’s Way. A 12-session program based on a best-selling book by Julia Cameron begins Thursday, May 16, at 7 p.m.

* Soy Foods. Discover the health benefits of soy foods and how to prepare them on Friday, May 17, at 7 p.m. Cost is $10.

* Creating your Preferred Life. Open up possibilities for creating work, relationships and play on Saturday and Sunday, May 18-19, from 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

The Arlington County Seniors in Action program offers a wide range of activities for seniors 55 and over. Fitness programs include aerobic exercise classes, strength training, walking groups, water aerobics, line dancing, square dancing, tennis, bowling, golf, yoga and Tai Chi. Join the Senior Adult Programs for $5 annually, and access all activities. In some instances, an additional cost, such as $2 a class, may be necessary. Call 703-228-4744.

* Computer Classes. The Office of Senior Adult Programs and Arlington County Adult Education have collaborated in designing computer classes for seniors. A five-class session is available at $25 per class or separate classes at $28 per class. The classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Clarendon Education Center (old Sears building). Call 703-228-7200 to register.

* Cyber Seniors/Cyber Teens is a program of youth teaching seniors how to use the computer, Internet and e-mail. Each course consists of four one-hour sessions taught at a local school or senior center at a cost of $20 per class. Currently there are three basic instruction courses being offered, a health-related course and classes in Word and Excel. Individuals over 50 are eligible to register for the classes by calling Joyce Bissonette at 703-228-6425.

* Senior Wellness. Kristen Taranto, senior wellness programmer, Office of Senior Adult Programs, meets weekly with seniors at Aurora Hills and Lee senior action centers. Taranto discusses ways to access county services and programs available to seniors. She will be at Aurora Hills, 735 S. 18th St., on Mondays at 10 a.m., and at Lee, 5722 Lee Highway, on Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m. There is no fee.

* Fitness and Exercise. Seniors who belong to the county’s Office of Senior Adult Programs, Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services, are eligible to use the fitness and exercise equipment at Thomas Jefferson Community Center, 3501 S. Second St., free of charge. Hours are Monday-Friday, from 6:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Participants pay a $5 annual registration fee, which allows them access to the fitness programs, as well as any program at senior centers countywide.

* Walking Club. The Walter Reed Senior Walking Club will walk in Bon Air Park, Monday, May 20, at 9:30 a.m. Cost is $2.50 for transportation to site. Newcomers welcome. Call to register at 703-228-5726.

* Skin Care. A skin care expert and color selection consultant will meet with seniors, Tuesday, May 21, at 1 p.m. at Culpepper Garden Senior Action Center. No fee. Newcomers welcome. Call to reserve a seat at 703-229-4403.

* Low Vision. A representative from the Low Vision Information Center will discuss vision problems for seniors and coping with impaired eyesight, Tuesday, May 21, at 10 a.m., at Culpepper Garden Senior Action Center. No fee. Newcomers welcome. Call to reserve a seat at 703-228-4403.

* “Growing Wiser As We Age,” is a six-part series conducted by senior wellness programmer Kirsten Taranto. It begins Tuesday, May 21, at 10:30 a.m. at Gunston/Drew at Carver Community Center. Cost is $3 for a workshop book. Newcomers welcome. Call to reserve a place at 703-228-5700.

* Hearing Loss. A demonstration of small listening devices to help seniors with hearing difficulties will be held Wednesday, May 22, at 11 a.m., at the Gunston and Drew Senior Centers at the Carver Community Center. No fee. Newcomers welcome. Call 703-228-5700 for details.

* Walking Club. The Lee Walkers at Lee Senior Action Center will travel to Huntley Meadows Place for their weekly walk on Friday, May 24, at 10 a.m. Fee is $2.50. Newcomers welcome. Call to register, 703-228-0555.

* Mammograms & Health Fair. The mammovan from George Washington University Breast Care Center will provide free mammograms for senior women (55-plus) who have not been previously treated for breast cancer, on Wednesday, May 29, from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Arlington Mill Community Center. At the same time, a health fair will be held including information booths on nutrition from Arlington Hospital, blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol checks, a lecture and film on breast self-examinations by a professor of nursing at Marymount University, and an “ask a nurse” booth.

Narcotics Anonymous is a support group for people who want to turn their life around from using drugs. The group meets at Drew Community Center, 3500 S. 24th St., on Tuesdays from 7:30-9 p.m. Call John Robinson at 703-979-7300.
