Michael Phillips of Oak Hill, a senior majoring in civil engineering at Syracuse University in New York, received the Harvey S. Smith Award at the University’s Army and Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) Chancellor’s Review and Awards Ceremony held April 5 in the Carrier Dome. The award is presented annually to the outstanding senior Army cadet and the outstanding senior Air Force cadet who is in the top 10 percent of the senior cadet class and top 25 percent of his or her school or college class.
On Tuesday, April 30, the Community Service Committee of the Nysmith School in Herndon hosted a day of jogging to benefit the Northern Virginia Special Olympics (NVSO). Nysmith students from kindergarten through eighth grade obtained pledges for their laps and then jogged for 30 minutes around the quarter mile track off McLearen Road. Over 3,700 laps were completed and Nysmith raised a total of $15,800. All of the money raised was donated directly to NVSO.
