Children's Theater

The Mount Vernon Community Children's Theatre presents The Brementwon Musicians and t he Elephant's Child, featuring children ages 6-8, Saturday, June 1, with shows at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. The shows will be held at Heritage Presbyterian Church, 8503 Ft. Seniors to be Honored

Twenty-seven local Hispanic high school seniors will be honored with the Ronald McDonald House Charities "Hispanic American Commitment to Educational Resources" Scholarship. Scholarship awards of $2,000 will be presented on Thursday, June 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Ann Mason Room and Courtyard of Gunston Hall in Mason Neck, Va. Area students include Deborah Guardado of West Potomac High, Juanita Russe of T.C. Williams High and Sonia Torrico of Thomas Jefferson High.

Jaycees to Hold Yard Sale

The Alexandria Junior Chamber of Commerce will hold a Community Yard Sale fund-raiser on Saturday, June 8, at West Potomac High School. Vendor set-up is from 6:30-7 a.m., with the yard sale event running from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Other yard sale dates are available on a 24-hour information line at 703-766-7171.

The Jaycees will provide complimentary spaces at the yard sales for seveal local community groups to raise money of their own. Contact the Jaycees for vendor rules.

MVO Concert

The Mount Vernon Orchestra will hold its final performances of the season on Sunday, June 2, at Bishop Ireton High School and Thursday, June 9, at Carl Sandburg Middle School. Both performances will be at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $17 for senior citizens and college students. Children under 18 are free. Call 703-799-8229.

Pope-Leighey House Technical Tours

Technical tours of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Pope-Leighey House, 9000 Richmond Highway, will be offered on June 2, July 7 and August 4 from 8:30-11 a.m. An in-depth examination of the house will be conducted and photo taking will be allowed. Admission is $25 for the general public and $20 for members of the National Trust. Space is limited. Call for reservations at 703-780-4000.

Final Social Dance of Year

The final dance of the 2001-2002 year for the Friday Nighters takes place at the Fairhaven Community Center on June 14, at 9 p.m. Social/ballroom dancing to live music of The Family. Reservations required. Call 703-799-3068.

Mature Operator's Driver Program

The Franconia District Station of the Fairfax County Police Department will be offering Virginia residents 55 and older enrollment in the Mature Operator's Driver Improvement Program (MODIP).

This eight hour class covers safe driving information for mature drivers. The course is sanctioned by the American Automobile Association (AAA) and is presented by certified Fairfax County Auxiliary Police Officers. Upon completion of this course, drivers are eligible for the Virginia State mandated insurance premium reduction (check with individual insurance carriers for the amount). Several MODIP classes have been scheduled at the Franconia District Station located at 6121 Franconia Road, Alexandria in the coming months.

Registration is required and can be done by contacting the Franconia Station Auxiliary Police at 703-924-3029. The fee for this course is $10 per person for books and materials.

MOMS Club New Meeting Location

The South Alexandria, Virginia chapter of the MOMS Club is open to moms in the following zip codes: 22303, 22306,22307, 22308, 22309,22310 and 22315.

The group meets on the second Tuesday of every month at 10:30 am. The June 11 meeting will be the last one held at Mount Vernon Unitarian Church, 1909 Windmill Lane. Inova Mt. Vernon Hospital Auxiliary Seeks Volunteers

The members of the Inova Mt. Vernon Hospital Auxiliary completed 25 years of service to the Inova Mt. Vernon hospital in 2001.

Volunteers serve in many capacities such as the gift shop, the thrift shop, "Select Seconds" and many other areas of the hospital. The administration of the hospital considers the volunteers to be invaluable.

The auxiliary's fund-raising events have netted over $2,500,000 to the hospital. All the money raised has been used to benefit the patients of Inova Mt. Vernon Hospital.

Presently, there is a need for men and women to volunteer in any of these areas of the hospital. Training is provided. Call Volunteer services at 703-664-7260 for more information.

Emotions Group

Emotions Anonymous is a support group based on the 12 Steps of AA, for people wanting to be well emotionally. We look for serenity and courage, and learn to live with unsolved problems.
