Matt Lent of Springfield improved the Terra Grande basketball court and Tot Lot area for his Eagle Scout project. The project included crack filling and blacktop sealing of the basketball court to remove cracks and graffiti; line painting; repainting of the backboards to remove graffiti and excess rust; removal of weedy overgrowth on court perimeter; installation of timbers to improve a path; mulching of the playground area; power-washing of benches; removal of brush from the playground perimeter; installation of a sign; and construction of an additional gravel path for bike/stroller usage. The project was held over a series of weekends beginning April 20th, with the final portion scheduled for May 27th, where the final line painting will take place. Lent is a member of Troop 859, which meets at Saratoga Elementary School.
<lst>Local beer wholesaler Guiffre Distributing joined U.S. brewery giant Anheuser-Busch recently in donating $30,000 to the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP), which a Washington-metropolitan alcohol education group. The grant will help fund the non-profit organization’s SoberRide program, which has provided 18,662 no-cost taxi rides home to area residents who otherwise may have driven drunk.
<lst> Local boy scout Jonathan Herpy, a freshman at Westfield High School, designed and build a horse racing board for the residents of Fairfax Nursing Center for his Eagle Scout project. Jonathan’s gift will be shared by the residents of Fairfax Nursing Center and its sister facility, The Gardens at Fair Oaks, an assisted living facility. Herpy is a member of Boy Scout Troop 893 under the direction of Scoutmaster Hondo Davids.
