Veterans Day Observed at GW Estate

The Sons (SAR) and the Daughters (DAR) of the American Revolution joined together with veterans and visitors to George Washington's grave at the Mount Vernon Estate for a Veterans Day ceremony Monday. Jack Evans, coordinator of volunteer services at the Estate introduced the Regent Mary Vaughan of the Kate Waller Barrett Chapter of the DAR to those gathered. Two veterans were asked to participate in the program. Lt. Col. Ted Shelton, USAF, led those present in the Pledge of Allegiance. Juan M. Solomon of the U.S. Marine Corps placed a boxwood wreath inside the tomb of the first president and commander in chief. Throughout the day veterans visiting the tomb were presented with red carnations that could be laid in the crypt. This year, the Mount Vernon Estate is extending free admission to military personnel for the entire month of November.
