Yukiko F. Tamashiro

Yukiko Tamashiro, 78, a retired school teacher died Nov. 6 in Reston. She was born on a plantation town of Koloa Kauai near Poipu Beach. Her father was chief carpenter for the sugar plantation. After graduating from Kauai High School, she worked in the county health department to earn travel costs to attend Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill. She received her bachelor's and master's degree from Wheaton College.

She taught in the Middletown High School in Middletown, N.Y.; Princeton, N.J., and 20 years in the Fairfax County school system. She also taught at Green Hedges, a private school in Vienna. In 1973, she was chosen as the first Fairfax County Teacher of the Year. She retired in June 1989.

Survivors include Sam Y. Tamashiro, her husband of 51 years, a son, Ken of Washington D.C., and a daughter, Lynn A. Warner of Reston. Also three brothers: Frederick of Longview, Wash.; David of Carson, Calif., and Ernest of Sterling, Pa.

Memorial services will be held Nov. 25 at Arlington National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 124 Park St. S.E., Vienna, VA 22180.
