Youth Ballet Performs ‘The Nutcracker’

If it’s Thanksgiving Week, it must be time for “The Nutcracker.”

<bt>The Haddad Youth Ballet will perform Tchaikovsky’s classical score set to dance at South Lakes High School on Saturday, Nov. 30, and Sunday, Dec. 1. Performances will be held at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday and at 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Tickets are $20, $18 and $14, according to age. Call 703-759-3366.

Marcello’s Exhibit Features Local Artist

Oil paintings by local artists from the Great Falls Arts Center are on exhibit at Marcello’s Ristorante at Great Falls Village Centre.

The 24 paintings include works by all age groups.

Big Band Plays at Colvin Run Schoolhouse

The Colvin Run Dance Band will perform big-band favorites for ballroom dancing at the Colvin Run Schoolhouse, 10201 Colvin Run Road, from 9 p.m.-midnight on Saturday, Nov. 30. Cost is $12 per person. The Colvin Run Citizens Association is a nonprofit group that supports charitable organizations in the local area. Call 703-430-3342.

Dec. 1 Worship Service Commemorates Losses

Great Falls United Methodist Church will have a worship service at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1, to reach out to those who have lost a loved one. The service will be in the church sanctuary at 10100 Georgetown Pike.

Great Falls Friends invites Great Falls residents and people who own businesses in Great Falls to join us for a light holiday breakfast at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, December 4, at the Old Brogue Snuggery.  Around 8:45, There will be a short meeting to present our annual report and to elect next year's board members.

Tree Lighting in Great Falls set for Dec. 6

The annual Great Falls Tree Lighting at Village Centre will be held on Friday, Dec. 6. The huge tree, located directly across Georgetown Pike from the fire station, will be lighted at 6:30 p.m. after Santa arrives on a fire truck.

He will visit with children in the gazebo, and each child will be presented with a sleigh bell.

Before and after the tree lighting, there will be time to see the petting zoo, a live Nativity scene and singing by Langley High School Madrigals. Hot cider will be served.

The event is sponsored by Robert Moore, Cannon Seafood, Margaret Johnson, and the Village Centre shops owners and restaurateurs.

Village Centre merchants will hold a holiday open house on Friday, Dec. 6, and Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. For information, call 703-759-2485.

Langley Madrigals to Perform for Historical Society

The Great Falls Historical Society has announced its Christmas program, featuring the Langley High School Madrigals under the direction of choral music director Mac Lambert.

The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the Great Falls Grange, 9818 Georgetown Pike in Great Falls. The public is invited at no charge. For information, call 703-759-2378.

Schools Close 2 Hours Early for Holidays

All Fairfax County public schools will close two hours early on Wednesday, Nov. 27, to help school buses avoid traffic jams on the day before Thanksgiving. Half-day kindergarten will operate on a Monday early closing schedule.

Marine Band Performs Holiday Sing-A-Long

“The President’s Own,” the U.S. Marine Band, will perform a free holiday concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, at Wolf Trap Farm Park for the Performing Arts.

The concert is free, and tickets are not required. Parking is also free.

Wolf Trap is accessible from Dulles Toll Road. From McLean, take the first exit west of Route 7/Leesburg Pike.

Luminarias to be Lighted on Dec. 6

The annual luminaria celebration at McLean Central Park will open at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6. Hundreds of luminarias — candles in small bags weighted with sand — will be lighted in the park at dark. Santa will arrive at 5:30 p.m. to have photos made with children.

Each luminaria will have a placard that personalizes it with the name of a person or organization honored with a donation to the Alzheimer’s Family Day Center on Westmoreland Street. For information on donations, call 703-532-8899, or go to www.alzheimersfdc.org and click on “events.”

Gift Donations Needed by Dec. 12

SHARE Inc. needs toys, clothing and gifts in new or pristine condition for its Christmas Shop to be open Dec. 13-14 at McLean Baptist Church on Chain Bridge Road.

For pickup, call 703-356-8818. Items can be dropped off at the church between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12. Clothing, toys, and household items will be available to individuals impacted by the economic downturn. After being screened, they have a 45-minute shopping spree in SHARE’s store to select gifts for their families.

Items to be donated should be new or like new, said Christmas store chairman Jean Respass. Items that are broken, stained, or unusable become problems for the volunteers, who must contend with them, she said.

Museum Shops Concentrate Quality Gifts All in One Place

The nonprofit museum shops sponsored by the McLean Project for the Arts will open at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 29, the day after Thanksgiving, at the McLean Community Center, 1234 Ingleside Ave. off Dolley Madison Boulevard in McLean.

The shops are also open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30, and from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1.

A prestigious group of area museums imports high quality merchandise from their shops to be displayed and sold here. Food is also sold and served, and there will be entertainment and book signings. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for students 12 and above. Children are admitted free.

Proceeds from gift sales support museums, and other proceeds fund programs in the visual arts at the McLean Community Center. For information, call 703-556-0455.
