Katrina Jeanetta Jones had just picked up her 11-year-old daughter from school Tuesday at around 4:25 p.m., when something went very wrong.
The 30-year-old city resident lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a wooden retaining wall in the 1300 block of North Pickett Street, rolling over before coming to a rest in a wooded area at the end of the street.
Jones was taken to Inova Alexandria Hospital where she died from injuries to her head.
Alexandria police reported that Jones was driving a silver 2001 Hyundai four-door sedan, traveling southbound on North Pickett Street. The vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed and was weaving in the roadway prior to impact. It is believed that Jones may have suffered a medical emergency before losing control of her vehicle.
Jones' daughter was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she was treated for her non-life threatening injuries.
The Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene. The exact cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the accident are still under investigation.
