Nirathi Jahnavi of Fairfax earned a bachelor of arts in journalism this past May from the University of Wisconsin.

Sara Wieseneck, daughter of Michael Wieseneck of Fairfax and a graduate of Yorktown High School in Arlington, is the recipient of a Rush Rhees Scholarship and a Xerox Scholarship at the University of Rochester. Named for the university's third president, the Rush Rhees Scholarship is given to high-ability students who score 1350 or higher on the SAT or a composite of 31 or better on the ACT tests. Xerox Scholarships are awarded for academic merit in the humanities or social sciences.

Carolyn L. Belefski of Fairfax Station accepted membership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars and will be honored during a campus ceremony this fall at Virginia Commonwealth University. The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is a highly selective, national, nonprofit honors organization. Founded in 1994, NSCS recognizes first and second year undergraduate students who excel academically.

Catherine E. Fermo of Springfield recently graduate with a master of arts in counselor education from Virginia Tech's Northern Virginia Center. She earned a B.S. from Virginia Tech in 1994. She is working as a middle school counselor. She is the daughter of Louis A. and Adrienne S. Fermo.

Gene M. McHale of Springfield recently graduated with a Ph.D. in civil engineering from Virginia Tech's Northern Virginia Center. He earned a B.S. in systems engineering and an M.E. in systems engineering from the University of Virginia in 1986 and 1987, respectively. He works for the Federal Highway Administration for the Office of Operations R&D in McLean.

Serena Eley, daughter of Linda Eley of Springfield, was selected as a 2002-03 Luce Scholar. A student at the California Institute of Technology, Eley will be able to use the scholarship to study at the Superconductivity Research Laboratory in Tokyo, Japan.
