City Restricts City Hall Access

As of Oct. 7, access to Alexandria City government buildings has been limited, according to a city announcement. The new regulations are part of increased security enhancements authorized by City Manager Philip Sunderland.

The decision to limit access to City Hall is based on the recommendations of an internal Safety and Security Committee chaired by Fire Chief Thomas Hawkins.

Sunderland explained, "The limitations are designed to increase the after-hour security of those using City Hall, while maintaining both reasonable access ... and the feeling of open government."

Under the announced plan:

. The Fairfax Street doors will be permanently closed as an entrance to City Hall. They can still be used as an exit.

. After 6 p.m., Monday through Friday and on weekends, the only entrances to City Hall will be through the center door on Market Square located behind the stage and the handicapped entrance doors on the west side of Market Square.

. Persons exiting City Hall after 6 p.m., will be able to use any of the doors.

Additional security enhancements are being considered, according to Sunderland. All city employees are now required to wear photo ID badges issued by the city.
