<cal2>Lt. John Henderson teaches the City of Fairfax Fire Extinguisher Training program in room 8 at the John C. Wood Municipal Complex, 3730 Old Lee Highway in Fairfax. Hands-on training will be offered using a Fire Simulator, which creates a small fire. To schedule classes, call the City of Fairfax Building and Fire Code Administration Office, 703-273-8109.

<cal1>Seniors

<cal2>Mature Operator's Driver Improvement Program. The Franconia District Station of the Fairfax County Police Department will be offering Virginia residents 55 and older enrollment in the Mature Operator's Driver Improvement Program (MODIP). This eight hour class covers safe driving information for mature drivers. Upon completion of this course, drivers are eligible for the Virginia State mandated insurance premium reduction (check with individual insurance carriers for the amount). The classes meet the second Saturday of each month. The next MODIP class will take place at the Franconia District Station located at 6121 Franconia Road, on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Subsequent seminars are scheduled for Dec. 14, 2002 and Jan. 11, 2003. <cal1>Dancing

<cal2>A circle/folk dancing class, featuring a mixture of traditional folk dance and modern choreography, will take place Oct. 19, and 26; Nov. 16 and 30; and Dec. 14, from 7:45 p.m. until 10 p.m. at Accotink Universalist Unitarian Church in Burke. The cost for five sessions is $25 for pledging members and $35 for those who do not pledge. Contact 703-451-2595.

Tap dance lessons for Fairfax County Senior Citizens, ages 55 and older, will be held at Little River Glen Senior Center, Barker Court, located just off Route 236 and Olley Lane in Fairfax, on Wednesdays. Free. Call 703-370-1466.

<cal2>The Springfield Art Guild will offer the following Fall Art classes:

Drawing, Plus: Ages 9-adult, eight Saturday classes, 10-11:30 a.m., Oct. 25-Nov. 23.

Exploring Watercolor with Roberta Lintner: Five Tuesday classes, 1-3:30 p.m., Oct. 22-Nov. 19 or five Thursday classes, 1-3:30 p.m., Oct. 24-Nov. 21. Cost is $50. Students must provide own materials. Specify on check which day is preferred.

Oil Painting Workshop: Every Wednesday from 12-3 p.m. Cost is $12 per session. Drop in for professional instruction by Karen Galleher. Students must provide own supplies.

Open Studio/Critique: First and third Thursdays of the month, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Bring own materials. Tables, chairs, water and spot lights available. Free.

Greenspring Village’s “English As a Second Language” program provides instruction to assist employees who want to improve their language skills. ESL classes meet twice a week. Volunteers who wish to enroll are asked to pay a $20 registration fee to be refunded after at the completion of the course. Follow-up ESL courses for students who wish to continue are now in the planning stage.
