Wilson to Become

Deputy County Manager

Ron Carlee, Arlington county manager, announced the selection last week of Joyce Wilson as the new deputy county manager and chief operating officer of the county. Wilson’s selection ends a nationwide recruitment drive to fill the position. She will begin work in the county on Oct. 14.

Wilson was born in the District and grew up in Arlington, where some members of her family still live. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Virginia Commonwealth University and a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard.

For the last eight years Wilson has served as the city administrator in Yuma, Ariz. Before taking that position, she worked for 10 years in the Richmond city government, including three years as the Assistant City Manager and Chief of Staff.

In a press statement, Carlee said he was happy to bring Wilson back to Arlington.

T.M. Shultz, city government reporter for the Yuma Sun newspaper, said that Yuma residents would miss Wilson in the city’s top slot. "I hate to see her go," Shultz said, but added that Wilson saw the job in Arlington "as going home."

Metro Sets Dates

For Ballston Upgrades

Officials from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority will hold a public hearing on plans to upgrade the Orange Line Metro station at Ballston. The hearing is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Electronic Industries Alliance, 2500 Wilson Blvd.

Construction at the station is subject to the availability of funds, but Metro is planning to add and upgrade elevators and escalators at the station to improve access, a project that could cost between $48-58 million. At this point, there is no projected start date for the project. Metro plans to conduct the upgrade in phases, but the project should be completed by 2006

At the eastern end of the station, Metro is proposing an additional elevator, next to the existing elevator on the north side of Fairfax Drive. In addition, construction would add a new pair of elevators and a connecting passageway on the south side of Fairfax Drive, near the existing escalator.

At the western end of the station, Metro is proposing to add a new entrance and escalator on the south side of Fairfax Drive, a new mezzanine and passageway to the new entrance and escalator, and a new pair of elevators on the south side of Fairfax Drive near the new escalator.

The design will include architectural details, access provisions, and communications similar to those in the existing facility.

Anyone wishing to speak at the hearing are asked to supply their name, address, telephone number and affiliation, if any, to Harold Bartlett Secretary, WMATA, 600 Fifth St., NW, Washington, DC 20001, or to fax the information to him at 202-962-1133.

In the meantime, Metro is already upgrading elevators at the station. Work will last from Sept. 3-17, during which the elevators will be out of service. A temporary shuttle bus between Ballston and the Virginia Square station is available for customers who request it.

Metro customers who need to enter or exit the Ballston station through elevators should call 202-962-1825 beforehand, but the bus is stationed in the area to accommodate these customers.

The story "Will Superbond Fly?" (Aug. 21) should have said that the chairman of the Neighborhood Traffic Calming Committee is Stephen W. Sockwell. The October Calendar in the Newcomers and Community Guide (Aug. 7-13) should not have said that the Jaycees Haunted House will be held at Ballston Mall. The Jaycees plan to announce a location for the Haunted House at a later date.
