<sh>Accident Injures Woman

<bt>An Oak Hill woman is in fair condition at Inova Fairfax Hospital after being struck by a car driven by a man who was drunk behind the wheel, according to police. The accident occurred last Wednesday, Sept. 4, around 8:30 p.m., on Franklin Farm Road in the Franklin Farm community.

Amarjit Basra, 39, and her daughter, 15, both of Oak Hill, were in a marked crosswalk and were trying to cross Franklin Farm Road at its intersection with Old Daily Court. Fairfax County police say the daughter noticed a vehicle approaching at a high rate of speed, warned her mother and ran across the intersection safely to the other side.

Basra, however, was struck by the vehicle, a 1997 Toyota Camry, and was Medevaced to the hospital. She sustained a skull fracture, broken left femur, pelvic fracture and internal injuries. Although she was initially admitted to the hospital in critical condition, her condition was later upgraded to fair.

Police charged the driver, Thomas Powers, 49, of Kinross Circle in Oak Hill with driving while intoxicated. Police say their investigation into this incident is continuing; Powers has an Oct. 11 court date.
