One Year Later — An Arrest

Montgomery County, Maryland, police have arrested Jovan Anthony Ali, 23, and charged him with possession of a handgun. Upon further investigation, police realized they had a man wanted in Fairfax County for attempted murder in connection with a shooting involving Fairfax County police about one year ago in Mount Vernon.

On Sept. 16, at about 7 a.m., 3rd District Officer Edward Paden of the Montgomery County police, ran a license plate check on a black Acura Legend in the parking lot of the Travelodge Hotel on 13th Street in Silver Spring, Md. The car had been reported stolen on Sept. 8.

While the officer was checking the tag, two adult males came out of the hotel and walked over to the stolen car. They saw the officer and the marked police car and retreated back into the room. Officers kept an eye on the hotel room and eventually one of the males exited the hotel and was picked up by another male who was driving a Cadillac Escalade.

Police stopped the vehicle on Eastern Ave. While the driver remained in the car, the passenger ran away, holding his side. He was followed by officers who observed him run down a set of stairs near an alley. The suspect lost his balance and fell on the stairs allowing a black handgun to fall from his waist. The gun was retrieved by the suspect and he continued to run. Officers found the suspect under a car in the Thrifty Car Rental parking lot at 1008 East-West Highway. The handgun was located under the vehicle next to where the suspect was hiding.

Both suspects from the Cadillac were placed under arrest and taken to the 3rd District Station. A small amount of drugs were also found in the Cadillac and a computer check determined the handgun had also been stolen.

The vehicle involved in the shooting from a year ago in Mount Vernon matched the description of the Cadillac Escalade driven by Jason David Alston, 24, of Virginia.

Ali was also wanted by the U.S. Marshals for violation of parole. Alston was charged this time with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and was being held in the Montgomery County Detention Center

Man Robbed, Beaten

Fairfax County police are investigating a robbery which occurred in the 8400 block of Graves Street in the Engleside area of the county shortly after midnight last Thursday.

A 30-year-old Alexandria area man and his wife were returning home when the man got out of his car and was approached by five men. Two of the five men brandished handguns and demanded money. When the victim replied that he had none, the suspects began punching and kicking the victim.

The victim's wife, who was still in their car, began screaming which gave the victim a chance to run away. The suspects chased and caught the victim and took his car keys.

The suspects then fled the area in a white, four-door car. The victim was transported to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

The suspects are described as black, 19-25 years old and wearing dark clothing.
