As part of the "Soup and Service" Lenten Series, Wesley United Methodist Church is hosting a simple supper of soup and bread, followed by a short service, each Thursday during Lent. The supper will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the service at 7 p.m. Wesley United Methodist Church is located at 711 Spring St. in Vienna. Child care will be available. St. John Catholic Church, located at 6420 Linway Terrace, McLean, has the following planned for this Lenten season: Mass will be offered at 7 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until Easter. Confessions will be heard each of these days at 6:30 p.m. On Wednesdays the rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. On Fridays Stations of the Cross will be held at 7:30 p.m.

St. John will sponsor a Lenten Lecture Series at 7:30 every Wednesday in the Parish Hall. The schedule is as follows: April 9, the Rev. Peter Ryan, S.J., on Ignatian spirituality; and April 16, Barbara Falk on Opus Dei spirituality.

The Shepherd's Center of Oakton-Vienna announces an open house and registration for the spring term to be held April 10, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., at their new location, the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 344 Courthouse Road, Vienna. Classes will include creative writing, T'ai Chi, Qi Gong, everyday spirituality, foreign affairs, an environmental study titled "A Sense of Place," and bridge. Classes will be April 24-June 12. A new booklet of daily devotionals written for the Lenten season by members of the congregation has been published by The Church of the Good Shepherd, a United Methodist church located at 2351 Hunter Mill Road, Vienna. The booklet begins with an Ash Wednesday (March 5) devotional and includes a special message from a different member for each day through Easter, which falls on April 20 this year. It marks the fourth year the church has published a Lenten booklet. As in previous years, the 2003 booklet will be mailed to 25,000 neighboring households and distributed to various ministries supported by the church. The booklet also will be available on the church’s Web site at

Join St. Thomas Episcopal Church for Holy Week. Our Maundy Thursday service on April 17, at 8:00 p.m., will include the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, the washing of the feet and the stripping of the altar. Good Friday services on April 18 include the Stations of the Cross at noon and the Good Friday Liturgy at 8:00 p.m. Easter Sunday Holy Eucharist services on April 20 are at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. At 11:00 a.m. a family Easter egg hunt will take place. St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church will celebrate Palm Sunday on April 13 at 8:15 and 10:15 a.m. with services and music to mark the beginning of Holy Week. Children are welcome in the Sunday School program and a children's nursery is also available. Both services include Eucharist.

Holy Week continues with a Christian Passover Supper on Maundy Thursday, April 17, at 7 p.m. and celebration of Eucharist at 8 p.m.

On Good Friday, April 18, there will be meditation at 12 p.m. and Stations of the Cross at 1 p.m. In the evening there will be an Experiential Stations of the Cross at 7 p.m.

On Easter Sunday, April 20, worship services will include the St. Dunstan's Choirs at both services. Children are welcome in the worship, but activities will be available for young children and a nursery will be available during the 10:15 a.m. service.

Parade of Palms, a celebration of Palm Sunday with St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Watch as Jesus, the disciples and a donkey arrive on Sunday, April 13, at the 11 a.m. service. Lutheran Church of the Redeemer invites everyone to join in its Holy Week services.

On April 13, Palm Sunday, the worship services at 8:30 and 11 a.m. will commemorate Jesus' entry into Jerusalem with the distribution of palms.

On April 17, Maundy Thursday, an 11 a.m. worship service will offer communion in remembrance of the Last Supper. The 7:30 p.m. service will explore Jesus' teachings of love and service with prayer and contemplation. The altar will be stripped in preparation for Good Friday.

On April 18, Good Friday, a 10 a.m. children's service will tell the story of Jesus' betrayal and suffering on the cross in a way that children will understand. The 7:30 p.m. candlelight service will provide an opportunity reflect on Christ's final hours.

On April 20, Easter Sunday, a 7 a.m. sunrise service celebrates the new day as a symbol of Christ's resurrection. 8:30 and 11 a.m. services feature the choir and musicians.

Epiphany United Methodist will celebrate Holy Week with the following special services and events:

On Palm Sunday, April 13, at 11 a.m., Joseph M. Martin will present "A Time for Alleluia," accompanied by a Holy Week. Easter Cantata performance.

On Maundy Thursday, April 17, at 6:30 p.m., "Witnesses for the Crucifixion." This service will consist of a meal, musical solos and a play depicting the hour Jesus was crucified as his friends search for him throughout Jerusalem. On Saturday, April 19, at 10 a.m., the annual Easter Egg Hunt will take place at the church. After the eggs hunt there will be a brief story time and sing-a-long. Light refreshments will be served.

On Easter Sunday, April 20, at 6 and 11 a.m., Easter service will be celebrated. The 6 a.m. sunrise service will be presented by Jim Walton and will be followed by a continental breakfast. Sunday school will be at 9:45 a.m.

Re-enact the Lord's Supper at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. On Thursday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m., participate in a Passover seder and foot-washing ceremony and relive the last night of Christ's life. Lux Aeterna, by Morten Lauriden, will be sung during the Good Friday evening service at St. John's Episcopal Church on April 18, at 7:30 p.m. The St. John's Choristers will be joined by organ, strings, woodwinds and brass. The public is welcome to attend any of the following Lenten activities at McLean Baptist Church.  Holy Week Noon-Day Prayer Services will be held weekdays, April 14-18, 12:00-12:30 p.m. in the sanctuary.  A Maundy Thursday Service, a quiet, introspective hour of worship, will be held April 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary.  An Easter EGGStravaganza will be held on Saturday, April  19, from 10 a.m.-noon for children ages 2 years old through 6th grade.  The children will play games, do crafts, have story time, refreshments, and hunt for Easter eggs.  A Sunrise Service will be held Easter Sunday morning, April 20, at 6:30 a.m. at McLean Central Park on the corner of Route 123 and Old Dominion Drive.  Parking is available across the street at J. Rend Rahim Francke, Executive Director of the Iraq Foundation, will present "Rebuilding Iraq" on April 22, 7:30 p.m., at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in McLean. A native-born Iraqi and published author as well as advocate for democracy and human rights in her homeland, Ms. Francke will bring her personal and professional expertise to the subject.

Christopher Chenoweth, founding minister of the non-denominational internet prayer ministry,, will offer his prosperity seminar for one day, April 27, at 1:30-5 p.m. at Unity of Fairfax, 2854 Hunter Mill Road, Fairfax. St. Dunstanís Episcopal Church, located at 1830 Kirby Road in McLean, VA will debut a new contemporary worship service on April 27th at 10:15 am. This worship service will feature uplifting contemporary music and an informal environment. Easy to understand Bible readings and an interactive sermon are planned. This new approach to worship is a direct result of year long, congregation wide analysis called ReVisions. The St. Dunstanís congregation decided to explore more updated styles of worship, while not relinquishing their traditional Sunday services. The Vienna Presbyterian Church (VPC) announces the opening of CenterPoint, the adult Christian education center. CenterPoint invites adults in the community to spiritual growth experiences through education. Five academic tracks on the Bible, Church History and Theology, Ethics and Christian Living, Spirituality and the Arts, and Church and Mission will be offered during the four 5-week terms. Classes will be offered through April 2003 on Sunday and Tuesday evenings. VPC staff, university, seminary, business and nonprofit organizations professionals will teach the classes. Emmaus United Church of Christ offers an Hour of Quiet. Spiritual renewal as the focus for a weekly ecumenical group that meets at Emmaus United Church of Christ every Wednesday from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Led by JoAn Post, participants are gently guided through a time of centering, meditation and prayer. Emmanuel Lutheran Church has a full range of education, music, worship and outreach programs. Traditional worship is at 8:15 and 11 a.m., in the rich Lutheran tradition of liturgical song mixed with music of the masters, spirituals and contemporary Christian music. The Baha’i community of McLean holds a weekly fireside, a meeting of discussion, devotion and fellowship, at 7500 Box Elder Court in McLean, beginning at 8 p.m. every Friday. The International Chabad-Lubavitch organization is establishing a new Jewish institution, Chabad at Tysons, which will serve Vienna, McLean and Great Falls.
