<sh>Crash Kills Motorcyclist

<bt>A 24-year-old Dale City man was killed, Saturday afternoon in Clifton, when his motorcycle collided with a car driven by a 74-year-old Annandale man. Adam Smoot was driving a 2001 Suzuki motorcycle southbound on Colchester Road near Newman Road, around 4:30 p.m., when the tragedy occurred.

Harold Nelson was driving a 2002 Mercury Sable on Newman Road and, according to Fairfax County police, "Nelson stopped at the stop sign, then pulled into the path of Smoot on Colchester Road." The motorcycle crashed into the vehicle and Smoot was Medivaced to Inova Fairfax Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police say neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the accident, and their investigation is still continuing.

<sh>Bias Incident is Investigated

<bt>Several years ago, Fairfax County approved the construction of a Muslim mosque in the vicinity of Walney Road and Westfields Boulevard in Chantilly. The group is still fund-raising and hasn't yet built the mosque. However, police say that, last Wednesday, April 9, around 7:45 p.m., a citizen discovered graffiti painted on the sign advertising the future mosque.

Police do not want to reveal exactly what was written, but they say the sign contained "threats against a religious building." Recognizing the potential harm that bias crimes and incidents can cause in a community, police encourage people to report them. All such crimes and incidents are investigated thoroughly.
