Special Volunteers Honored at Awards Luncheon

A special awards luncheon was held last month at the Campagna Center. It was an opportunity for members of the Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization of the National Capital Area to recognize their volunteers, as well as their long-time members.

The Gina Award, is named for Gina Plummer, who became active in Y-ME in 1986 after she began her battle with breast cancer. By reaching out to help those dealing with cancer, she worked to encourage and support others despite her own progress illness.

During her final days, it was discussed that an on-going memorial award would be established in her name. It was her Plummerís wish that the award be given to somebody who was dedicated to the HOPEline, Y-ME NCA's 24/1 hotline which helps newly-diagnosed breast cancer patients and arranges on-on-one matches for those undergoing treatment with trained breast cancer survivors. The honoree would be somebody who had contributed in and "above and beyond" duty.

This year's award recipient was Nancy Kincaid. Past recipients include Kathleen Bigelman, Harriett Fidd, Karen Gary, Joanne Gresko, Sylvia Hackbarth, Marcy Kozar, Alice Petree, Laura Rappaport, Nan Farmer and Karin Noss.
