William Benjamin Mann of Broad Run High School has been awarded Armfield, Harrison & Thomas, Inc.'s (AH&T) sixteenth annual $2,500 scholarship. Mann will be attending the College of William and Mary and plans to major in government and history in pursuit of a public service career. AH&T is an independent insurance agency in Leesburg.
On Saturday, Aug. 23, from 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m., and on Sunday, Aug. 24, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., children ages 5-14 are invited to donate used children's books to the H&M store at the Dulles Town Center. In return for their donation, they will receive a coupon for 20 percent off an entire outfit from the children's department for their first day of school. The community is invited to a sneak preview event of the new Dominion High School located at 21326 Augusta Drive in Sterling on Saturday, Aug. 16. "Taste of Titan Territory" runs from 5-9 p.m. and features activities for the whole family. A pot luck picnic kicks off the event.

* Fun and games with old-fashioned country fair games like potato sack races, water balloon toss, relay races and more;
* Face painting of the Titan "T" a symbol of Dominion High School spirit;
* Tours of the new school led by future Titan students;

Mike Benonis, a junior at Stone Bridge High School, placed 10th nationally in the computer concepts event at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Leadership Conference on June 27 in Dallas. FBLA and its post-secondary and college counterpart, Phi Beta Lambda Inc. (PBL), are professional associations for students pursuing business careers. Benonis' award was part of a comprehensive competitive events program.
The Virginia High School League (VHSL) has informed Park View High School that it is a recipient of the Wachovia Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award. Park View ranked 14th out of 67 Group AA schools in the 2002-2203 Wachovia Cup standings.
Jeremy Thompson, a fourth-grader at Horizon Elementary, has been named a winner of the Virginia Association of Pupil Transportation (VAPT) Poster Contest. His artwork will be featured in a VAPT calendar that will be released during August. The object of the contest was to deliver an important bus safety message through art. The theme of this year's contest was "Shhh-Railroad Crossing."
Loudoun United Way and the Loudoun County Department of Social Services are sponsoring a school supply drive through the month of August. People are being encouraged to visit participating grocery stores or pharmacies and purchase a school supply for a child who may not otherwise be able to afford it.
Donate needed school supplies at local Giant, Safeway and Rite Aid stores. The Leesburg Pharmacy and Sonak Family Practice (in Sterling) are also partners and will be collecting donations.
Loudoun nonprofits, government agencies and elementary schools working with low-income families will distribute the supplies in time for school in August. Participating agencies include: YMCA-Big Friends, Northeast Coalition, LARC, Department of Mental Health, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Transitional Housing, Department of Social Services and several area elementary schools.
Look for a donation box or shopping cart with the School Supplies posters and flyers in participating stores and donate to a child in need.
Students need book bags, spiral notebooks, three-ring binders, number 2 pencils, loose leaf 3-ring paper, scissors (round end), rulers, crayons, composition books, pocket folders, Kleenex, plastic storage bags, liquid soap and lots of miscellaneous items.

The Ashburn Ruritan Club has donated $200 to local troops of the Boy Scouts of America, Girls Scouts of America and the 4-H Club in order to support camping and educational tours this summer for young people. The club also donated $150 to the senior class of 2003 of Stone Bridge High School to support a landscaping project the class was performing as a parting gift to the school. Loudoun County High School in Leesburg will celebrate its 50th anniversary during the 2003-04 school year. For Alumni Night on Friday, Sept. 19, when the Raiders play Fauquier. The school plans to recognize the three undefeated football teams in the program’s history and former homecoming queens. The first undefeated team was the first in the program’s history, in 1954. Ashley Nicole Franck and Jeffrey Robert Papirtis have graduated from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla. Franck and Papirtis are both alumni of Loudoun County High School. Franck earned her bachelor’s degree of science in family relations and child development and Papirtis earned his in geography.
Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) is offering a new degree in international marketing beginning with the fall 2003 semester. The two-year associate in applied science degree is a response to the importance of global marketing in the current business environment. The program concentrates on business-to-business and business-to-consumer transactions by means of traditional marketing methods and electronic commerce. Graduates may wish to seek careers with the federal government or private industry.

The Fresh Air/Full Care campaign has sent 78 children to summer camp after winning a $50,000 matching grant from the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors to match $50,000 previously raised. The Loudoun County Social Services board led by special initiatives chairman Curtis B. Gans, the Loudoun Times-Mirror and the Piedmont Community Foundation teamed up for this year's campaign. The first $40,000 raised went to sending children to camp, the remaining funds will provide day care to as many children as possible. Because there are more than 600 children on a day care waiting list but not enough funding, the campaign will go through October this year and resume in February 2004. The goal is to raise $1.6 million to provide for all the children on the list. Registration is now open for the third year of Loudoun County Public Schools' (LCPS) stringed instrument program. The program will not be in partnership with Shenandoah University for the 2003-2004 school year, but there are no major changes to the program. Registration forms are available at school offices, guidance departments, from music teachers and at the Fine Arts Office at the LCPS North Street Offices, 102 North Street, N.W., Leesburg. The program will be offered to students in grades 4-8 at each of the school system’s nine middle schools and Harmony Intermediate School. For the first time, a county-wide stringed orchestra will be formed. The annual Loudoun County Public Schools College Fair will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28 at Stone Bridge High School. Representatives from more than 175 institutions will be present. Limited parking will be available at the school, with satellite parking at Sanders Corner Elementary, Hillside Elementary and Eagle Ridge Middle School. Shuttle buses will run every 15 minutes from these schools. Buses will also leave the other county high schools at 5:30 p.m. for Stone Ridge.
