On Thursday, November 20, , Northern Virginia Family Service presented its 11th Annual Companies As Responsive Employers (CARE) Awards at a breakfast at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner. Former WJLA news anchor Paul Berry announced the award winners, and J. Knox Singleton, president and CEO of Inova Health System, served as keynote speaker. An audience of over 300 business and community leaders gathered to celebrate this year's award winners:

Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, small company winner, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that represents 160,000 educators from across the globe. ASCD addresses all aspects of effective teaching and learning and its members span the entire profession of educators. Among ASCD's favorable employee benefits are flexible work arrangements, adoption assistance, EAP, transportation subsidy, credit union, and savings bonds for the birth or adoption of a child. Employees enjoy wellness programs including subsidized on-site massage therapy and aerobics classes, and free gym access. Employees report that ASCD is a fun place to work, with a caring staff, plenty of employee involvement opportunities, and an organizational mission to which they have a strong connection.

Datatel, mid-size winner, has provided integrated software and professional services to the higher education industry for the past two decades. The annual Torchbearer Citation was awarded to SRA International Inc., a leading provider of information technology services and solutions. The Torchbearer Citation is awarded to former CARE Award winners who have continued to enhance and expand their family-friendly policies and programs.

In 1992, Northern Virginia Family Service enlisted the support of the business community to help initiate positive change in the workplaces of Northern Virginia. The annual CARE Awards program was established to recognize companies that are leaders in providing family-friendly benefits and policies for employees and that are committed to helping employees maintain a healthy work/life balance.
