Chantilly Hosts Bands

200 students from 29 schools participate in All-District Bands

Chantilly High School hosted the 2003 District XII All-District Bands from Jan. 30 to Feb. 2. More than 200 students from 29 District XII schools participated in the weekend-long event, concluding with a spectacular closing concert, featuring the All-District Junior Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble.

Students auditioned for All-District Band in early January and Chantilly had 14 students selected for the weekend.

Chantilly students in the Symphonic Band were: Mary Real (flute), Sung Yoon Kim, Dan Nicotera, Lehla Olson and Pat Loerch (clarinet), Gina Holman and Matt Palen (saxophone), Dan Hill and Matt Gillen (trumpet), Theresa Ashley (french horn) and Julie Kim (keyboard percussion).

The All-District Symphonic Band was directed by Timothy Salzman, director of bands at the University of Washington.

The All-District Wind Ensemble was directed by Jerry F. Junkin, director of bands at the University of Texas. Chantilly members of the Wind Ensemble were: Noah Bennerson (tuba), Stephen Jackson (string bass) and David Lewis (percussion).

Both Salzman and Junkin thanked the students and teachers for their hard work in developing such outstanding musicians.

"The reputation of the quality of student musicians in this district is known nationally. However, I'm even more impressed having worked with your students this weekend," said Salzman.

Students participating in the District Wind Ensemble are eligible to audition for All-Virginia Band, which will be held in Richmond in April.
