Scouts Snare Eagle

<bt>Garry McLinn and Phillip Hess, both 15, of Burke, recently earned their Eagle Scout Rank and Bronze Palm, after completing all requirements including individual boy-led community service projects.

Garry and Phillip started their scouting careers together in Troop 698, chartered by Burke Rotary and meeting at White Oaks Elementary School. They have advanced together almost every step of the way.

In June 2002, both boys completed their Eagle Scout service projects. For his service project, Phillip led a group of scouts and adult volunteers in building a storage shed for Shelter House, a homeless shelter in Falls Church that provides temporary housing and support programs to homeless families. Garry’s service project improved the safety and appearance of the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and Preschool by remarking and painting handicapped parking and safety lines, removing brush and debris and repainting crosswalks and no-parking zones.

Phillip received his award on Oct. 20, 2002 in a Court of Honor at Fairfax Presbyterian Church. Garry received his award on Dec. 8, 2002 in a Court of Honor at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

Garry is the son of Col. (Ret) and Mrs. John McLinn and Phillip is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Doug Hess.
