After three years on the job, Cluster I director Joan Wilcox will be retiring May 30. The Fairfax County Public Schools has already begun the process to find her replacement.
Wilcox, whose cluster includes the Herndon, Langley and McLean pyramids, came to the school system after retiring from the United States Department of Defense schools in Germany.
"I retired from the DOD schools and moved right into this," Wilcox said. "I've worked enough in my life."
The Maryland resident began her tenure here in 2000, when the school system dissolved the three administration areas in favor of the eight clusters.
"My grandchildren are in the area and I want to help with them," Wilcox said.
She chose May 30 to retire, she said, because she had a big, family wedding to attend the first week of June.
Wilcox will be the second director to retire since the administrative switch was made. Thomas "Mike" Engley, Cluster VI director, retired at the end of December.
