Volunteer Fairfax announces the call for nominations for its 11th annual Fairfax County Volunteer Service Awards, "Celebrate Volunteers — The Spirit of America!" The public is invited to nominate individuals and groups who have volunteered noteworthy time, energy and expertise to meet community needs. Businesses, individuals, nonprofit organizations, public agencies, schools, and civic groups are encouraged to submit nominations. All nomination forms must be received by 5 p.m., Monday, Feb. 24. <cal2>The Hon. Jane Marum Roush, a judge on the Circuit Court in Fairfax, will address League of Women Voters members and guests on the topic of "Public Trust and Confidence in the Justice System" at the organization's general meeting and lunch on Saturday, Jan. 11.
Roush, a judge since 1993, chairs the Court's Magistrate Committee and is a member of the Fairfax Bar Association's Circuit Court Committee and Pro-Bono Advisory Board. She plans to address topics such as judicial selection in Virginia, especially as compared with other states, access to the justice system for those with little money or who do not speak English, and public outreach efforts by judges.
The meeting will be held at the Marco Polo Restaurant in Vienna (245 Maple Ave. West) beginning at 10 a.m. The cost of the lunch is $18 and reservations are needed; call 703-256-8416.
The League will follow up Judge Roush's speech at its unit meetings during the second week of February at 15 locations throughout the Fairfax area. Using material provided by the American Bar Association, League members and guests will further consider the topic: "...and Justice for All: Ensuring Public Trust and Confidence in the Justice System." * Jan. 27, 2003 — The art of the topiary has been practiced for centuries. Today, the use of topiaries is becoming more popular both in landscaping and interior decorating. From the formal to the whimsical, these living forms are easy to create. Doug Brock, a plant specialist from Betty's Azalea Ranch, will demonstrate how to make sphagnum topiaries using pre-made topiary forms, sphagnum moss and a variety of plants.

<cal2>Organizations planning special events in Fairfax County can learn the logistical do's and don'ts from Celebrate Fairfax Inc., the group that produces the largest festival in Northern Virginia — Celebrate Fairfax. The first annual Events 101 Workshop will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center. Topics include permitting, traffic management, volunteer recruitment, publicity, emergency planning, vendors and contracts management.
