Aull Wins Silver
<bt>Kay Aull, 17, of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, was one of two silver medalists at the International Biology Olympiad sponsored by the Center for Excellence.
One hundred and sixty-four participants representing 41 countries competed in the international competition staged in Minsk, Belarus, earlier this month. This is the first time the United States has participated in the event.
<sh>Grant Awarded for Programs
<bt>The Fairfax Partnership for Youth has received a second-year grant award from the Governor's Office of Substance Abuse Prevention, which will be used to support after-school programs for middle-school-aged youth throughout the county.
The first-year grant was used for such things as establishing the Fairfax County After-School Network, developing a Community Action Plan and convening a day-long forum on after-school programs.
Under the new grant award, three regional meetings focusing on building collaborative partnerships and leveraging community resources will be held throughout the county. In addition, there will be a peer-exchange conference in the spring for after-school program managers, in-school staff and administrators to discuss best practices, program evaluation and linking in-school and after-school presentation activities.
