Fatal Accident

The Fairfax County Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash that happened in the Burke area on Tuesday, June 10, around 1:55 p.m.

Ashley Thompson, 16, of 7021 Veering Lane in the Burke area, was driving a 1998 Jeep Cherokee northbound on Lee Chapel Road approaching Claychin Court. Thompson lost control of the vehicle, veered left and struck a concrete median. She then entered the intersection with Claychin Court, veered right, over another concrete median, crossing two lanes of northbound Lee Chapel Road and hit a tree on the driver's side. Thompson, who police said was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither speed nor alcohol was a factor.

<sh>Minor Sexually Assaulted

<bt>Fairfax County Police arrested Jose Luis Carpano, 21, of Dayspring Court, in the Springfield area following an investigation into an incident that occurred on Sunday, May 11. A 14-year-old Alexandria area girl was with friends at a local carnival and was introduced to Carpano. Later that day, he invited the girl back to his house. Carpano allegedly sexually assaulted the girl in his home. Carpano was arrested at his place of work an transported to the Adult Detention Center where he was charged with one count of carnal knowledge of a minor and held without bond.

<sh>Assault In Park

<bt>Fairfax County Police are investigating an assault that occurred on a path in Old Forge park in the Fairfax area on Monday, June 9, around 5:30 p.m.

A 29-year-old Fairfax area woman was walking her dog in the park when she was hit on the back of the head an knocked to the ground. She momentarily lost consciousness and when she awoke, a man was on top her holding a sharp object, said police. Noise nearby startled the man and he let go of the woman and ran off. The woman was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital where she was treated for several scrapes and lacerations.

The man was only described as wearing a dark jacket, ski mask, blue jeans and rubber gloves. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 703-691-2131 or Crime Solvers at 703-691-8888.

<sh>School Renewal

<bt>The Fairfax County School Board awarded a $7,551,700 contract to R.R. Gregory Corp. for the renewal of Laurel Ridge Elementary School. Laurel Ridge is a block away from Robinson Secondary School in the Braddock District. The contracts ranged from R.R. Gregory on the low side, to an $8,009,700 by Falls Church Construction Corp. on the high end.

<sh>Rezoning Public Hearing

<bt>The Fairfax County Planning Commission will meet on Wednesday, June 25, at 8:15 p.m., to discuss a public a rezoning application of five parcels of land for a proposed development located south of Lee Highway on Rust Road between the City of Fairfax and the Expo/Food Lion Shopping Center. The applicant is requesting 25 lots with a density of 3.99 houses per acre. Consolidated together, the parcels of land equal 6.25 acres, with the Comprehensive Plan recommending up to four houses per acre.

The meeting will take place in the Board Auditorium, Ground Level, Government Center Building, 120000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax.

Besides the Planning Commission public hearing, Braddock District supervisor Sharon Bulova will have a citizen information meeting on this property on Monday, June 23 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will take place at Braddock Hall in the Braddock District Office, 9002 Burke Lake Road. The Board of Supervisors will discuss this item at a date to be determined later.
