<lst>Boys ages 11-18 in the Reston area are invited to participate in the Boy Scouts with Troop 1970. Children acquire skills, make new friendships and help others in the community. Troop 1970, one of several in the area, was established in 1965. Monthly weekend activities include camping, focusing on a specific activity such as rafting, canoeing, fishing, back packing, hiking, biking, caving and bouldering. Scouts 13 and older seeking a challenging experience may join the troop Venture Crew whose members plan and train all year for a special event during the summer. Past Venture Crew trips include canoeing in the Adirondacks and on Virginia's New River, sailing in the Florida Keys, and horseback riding and kayaking as part of Goshen Scout Camp's Lenhoksin program. The Troop has been involved in Scouting for Food, assisting with the Reston Triathlon and the 2000 Inaugural Opening Ceremony. Troop members also hold several annual fundraisers.
Troop 1970 has 33 active scouts and 12 trained uniformed leaders. Rank advancement occurs naturally when Scouts take part in meetings and activities on a regular basis; between 1989 and 2002, ten Scouts received the Eagle rank.
