AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Anna Lvovsky of Thomas Wootton High School and Michael Beder and Danielle Zilberstein, both of Winston Churchill High School, were among 16 Maryland students recognized as outstanding writers at a recent State Board of Education ceremony. Lieutenant Governor Michael S. Steele presented each student with a citation for receiving the 2002 Achievement Award in Writing from the National Council of Teachers of English.
Juliana Cole of Potomac performed in Earlham College’s Spring Choral Concert in Richmond, Ind. Selections included “O Fortuna” and “Requiem, Op. 9.” Cole is a sophomore at Earlham.
Shaina Elias of Potomac, daughter of Irene and Jonathan Elias, was named to the dean’s list for the winter quarter at the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill.
Marc Johnson, son of David and Marion Johnson of Potomac, hosted the opening of his first one-man painting exhibit on May 2, at the Vino Wine Gallery in Coconut Grove, Fla. Marc Johnson is a student at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. He will receive his BFA in art this coming December.
Holton-Arms students Lisa L. Korn and Elise E. Shanbacker were selected as National Merit Scholarship winners.
Lisa Korn, of Potomac, is daughter of Eda Bloom, Ph.D. and Edward Korn, Ph.D. She is a Cum Laude Society member, a Maryland Distinguished Scholar semifinalist, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and was recognized for having the highest cumulative average in math and science. She was captain of Holton-Arms’ varsity soccer team in her senior year and will attend Princeton University.
Elise Shanbacker, of Bethesda, is daughter of K. Edward Shanbacker and Noreen O’Meara-Shanbacker. She is a member of the Cum Laude Society, an AP Scholar, a Maryland Distinguished Scholar and a National Latin Exam 4-time gold medal winner. She played on Holton-Arms’ varsity volleyball and softball teams, and will attend Middlebury College.
Trent Lierman of Bethesda will study abroad at Augsburg College, Managua, Nicaragua, as part of the Bates College Junior Semester Abroad Program. A Latin-American studies major, Lierman graduated from Walt Whitman High School in 1999. He is a member of the men’s cross country and indoor and outdoor track teams at Bates.
Philip Lloyd Martin of Potomac received a doctorate in veterinary medicine during a commencement ceremony Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan.
Alexandra Webster of Bethesda, a senior majoring in English and textual studies at Syracuse University, was recently inducted into Lambda Alpha Delta National Honor Society. Lambda Alpha Delta recognizes achievement for students majoring or minoring in anthropology.
