The Flint Hill Elementary Student Cooperative Association has begun planning its 11th Holiday Craft Fair, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the school gym. This well-advertised event is eagerly anticipated by 700-plus students and their families! Crafters to sell and exhibit handmade crafts, ornaments, clothes, gifts, pottery, etc., are being sought. Sean Dunaway, son of Steven Dunaway and Deborah Best, both of McLean, was honored for his achievements as a member of Randolph-Macon Academy's speech and debate team this school year. Sean, a junior at the academy, earned 70 points during this year's first season and a Single Ruby honor, reserved for those who have earned a cumulative score of 250 points or more, from the National Forensics League. He and partner, Robert Snitchler of Front Royal, took second place in the Ted Turner/Controversy Debate at the first season tournament of the Northern Virginia Forensics League held at West Springfield High School in Alexandria on Oct. 8. The next day, Sean competed at a tournament of the Commonwealth Forensics League at Courtland High School in Spotsylvania and placed first in Original Oratory and third in Extemporaneous Speaking. Sean is a member of the National Honor Society, the Latin National Honor Society, and the Honor Council.
Benjamin Hough, son of Lisa Trimble of Vienna, scored a major victory in his speech and debate career at Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, Va. A senior at the academy, Benjamin earned 67 points during Season 1 of the school year, which holds him at a Double Ruby honor in the National Forensics League. Double Ruby honors are for those who have earned 500 points or more in the league.
Ben began his season by taking first place in dramatic performance at the Washington-Arlington Catholic Forensics League competition on Oct. 4 at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Md. At the first season tournament of the Northern Virginia Forensics League on Oct. 8 at West Springfield High School, Ben took third place in student congress. Then, on Oct. 9, Ben competed in the inaugural tournament of the Commonwealth Forensics League at Courtland High School in Spotsylvania, Va., where he took third place in dramatic performance.
Ben is a recipient of the 2002-03 National Merit Scholarship Commendation. He is also a member of the National Honor Society.
Mary Grace Hyland, a senior at James Madison High School in Vienna, was recently honored by Rep. Frank Wolf as a Congressional Award winner on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. The Congressional Award requires achievements in volunteer service, sports, personal development and exploration. Grace was the youngest person in the commonwealth of Virginia to have achieved her emergency medicine (EMT) certification. She also received her award for participation as a volunteer at the Vienna Fire Department, as a tennis player in Reston summer leagues and at Madison High School and for scientific exploration.
The Great Falls Elementary PTA has concluded its fall fund-raising efforts. The Sally Foster Gift Wrap and Candy Sales program brought in over $40,000 this year. These profits will be used to fund various PTA programs meant to enhance the student body's academic experience and to fund the classroom technology upgrade.
Great Falls Elementary students have voted for and elected their new Student Council Association officers for the 2003-04 year. The elected officers will lead the student council representatives, who have been selected from each classroom, in planning activities for the student body throughout the year. They are out of the gate and running with two projects, a food drive and a soda can tab collection effort for the Ronald McDonald House.
The Great Falls Elementary School PTA's Family Social/Educational Committee kicked off its first event of the year on Friday, Oct. 24, with a costume dance that sold over 525 tickets. Some of the costumes included wizards, cowboys/girls, movie stars, athletes, princesses and a queen.
Ryan Miller, son of Ed and Lorna Miller of Fairfax and grandson of Holbrook and Edna Miller of Vienna, attended the National Youth Leaders Conference held in Washington, D.C., Nov. 4-9. This leadership development program invites high-school students based on scholastic merit, community involvement and leadership contributions to meet face to face with members of the U.S. Congress and their staff as well as work through issues facing the United States in a series of simulations.
Long & Foster Real Estate once again offers its annual Long & Foster $150,000 Scholarship Program for well-rounded graduating high school-seniors entering an accredited four-year college or university. The Long & Foster Scholarship Program will award $1,000 to each of 150 worthy recipients throughout its seven-state region for the 2004-05 academic year. The monetary scholarship award will be made payable directly to the college or university in the student’s name. The deadline for applying is March 1, 2004, and the scholarships will be awarded beginning May 3, 2004.
Eligible high-school seniors must have at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, demonstrate financial need, indicate positions of leadership they held while a student and describe in which school groups they have been involved, community organizations in which they have served, and whether they have held a part-time job while in school, to be considered well-rounded applicants. Applicants will be asked to write a short essay on either their most significant high-school experience or their expectations for college.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts selected Greg Duesterhaus of Vienna for an internship this fall as part of the Centerís Vilar Institute for Arts Management.
The son of Richard and Judith Duesterhaus, Duesterhaus attended Bishop Denis J. O'Connell High School in Arlington, where he was involved in the drama program and a recipient of the 1999 Drama Award. He went on to attend George Mason University, where he graduated in May 2003 with a bachelor's degree in theater. Greg is also an Eagle Scout and assistant scoutmaster for Troop 976. He plans to pursue a career in production management and later hopes to earn a master's degree in arts management.
Greg interns in the Kennedy Center production department, which is responsible for the production of shows and events in the Kennedy Center's six theaters and non-theater spaces. Greg is involved in daily administrative/ logistical support for upcoming shows, researching long-range projects and working on events and shows as a production or design assistant.
The public is invited to an evening of jazz presented by SONUS. This Washington, D.C., group will perform on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m., in Kilmer Auditorium at Green Hedges School, 415 Windover Ave. N.W., Vienna. The evening will begin with several student performances. The group has performed at clubs and cafes in and around the D.C. area and has developed a loyal following of jazz enthusiasts who enjoy the smooth instrumental arrangements performed by Rob Blount on piano, Gary Hacker on drums, Dan Griffin on bass, Mavis C. Waters singing vocals.
Admission is $25 for adults; students are free. Proceeds support the Green Hedges School music program.
