The Vienna Town Council unanimously approved the request to designate the Sons and Daughters Cemetery in the 500 block of Orchard Street Northwest as a Town of Vienna Historic Site. Both Town Manager John Schoeberlein and Historic Vienna Inc. had previously seen and approved the request prior to Monday evening's meeting.
The Council also discussed the following items:
*Incoming president of the North East Vienna Citizens' Association (NEVCA) Edgar Adamson submitted to the Council a resolution passed unanimously by the NEVCA membership, which asks the Town of Vienna to establish a joint task force on the best long-term use of Beulah Road Park. The surrounding neighbors of the park had been concerned that Vienna had used the space as a holding area for materials and supplies.
*Philip Taylor asked Council members to ensure that the noise ordinance is enforced by Vienna Police and urged town employees to have good relations with both town residents and nonresidents. Taylor had been awakened by delivery trucks coming into Popeye's past midnight and said he had called Vienna Police repeatedly over the past year to enforce the noise ordinance. Vienna mayor Jane Seeman told Taylor to contact her if the noise starts up again.
*In response to a question by Councilman Al Boudreau, John Schoeberlein reported that the Public Works Department crews have been working seven days a week for the past two weeks to clean up debris. They have gone through the southwest and northwest quadrants of the town, are working on the northeast quadrant, and expect to start on the southeast quadrant soon, with an estimated finish of work within the next two weeks. Schoeberlein said crews had so far picked up 393 tons of brush and 97 tons of special pickups.
*Schoeberlein reminded Council members that the Madison Homecoming Parade will take place on Maple Avenue on Friday, Oct. 24, between 2:45 and 3:15 p.m.
*Council approved unanimously the following items: a cooperative purchase approval for an Office Depot/U.S. Communities contract; sole-source procurements with Fairfax County Journal Advertising and Washington Post Advertising; the reappointment of Peter VanderNat to the Planning Commission, of Mary Wilkerson and John Brunow to the Community Enhancement Commission, of Frank Johnson to the Transportation Safety Commission; and the acceptance of a letter from Connie Stuntz of resignation from the Windover Heights Board of Review.
