Stephen K. Whittenberg has entered basic cadet training at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Col., in preparation to enter the first academic year at the academy. The six-week, two-phased orientation program trains men and women to meet the rigorous mental and physical challenges of a cadet. Whittenberg is the son of Karl and Susan Whittenberg of Lakeland Valley Drive, Springfield. He is a 2003 graduate of Lake Braddock Secondary School, Burke.

Marine Corps Capt. William A. Scheetz Jr. recently completed a training exercise near Djibouti, Africa, while assigned to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, based in Camp Lejeune, N.C. Scheetz is a 1990 graduate of Lake Braddock High School.

Marine Corps 1st Lt. Mark S. Gombo, son of Janice R. and Johnie Gombo of Burke, recently reported for duty at Marine Aviation Training Support Group, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Oak Harbor, Wash. Gombo is a 1996 graduate of Lake Braddock Secondary School of Burke and joined the Marine Corps in December 2000. He is a 2000 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Va., with a bachelor of science degree.

Cadet David Stone, a 2004 graduate of the University of Virginia, graduated from the Army ROTC National Advanced Leadership Camp at Fort Lewis, Wash, on Aug. 11. The course was four weeks long and consisted of military training, testing and leadership exercises. Stone also received an award for achieving the highest physical readiness test score in the regiment by scoring 370. Stone graduated from Robinson Secondary School in 2000. His parents, Col. and Mrs. George F. Stone III, reside in Burke.
